01 The Deccan Riots of 1875 were related to which problem?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. Peasant indebtedness and moneylender exploitation
Explanation: Correct answer: A, peasant indebtedness and moneylender exploitation. The Deccan Riots took place in 1875 in the Bombay Deccan, where many peasants faced heavy debt. Difficult economic conditions and revenue demands made it hard for them to repay loans. Moneylenders often controlled credit and kept legal documents, accounts or property-related claims, which increased peasant resentment. The unrest was therefore directed largely against moneylenders and the oppressive debt relationship. The Simon Commission came much later, in the twentieth century, so option B belongs to a different period. The Salt Satyagraha was a 1930 movement associated with the national movement and salt laws, not the 1875 Deccan disturbances. The Mountbatten Plan belongs to the period immediately before independence in 1947. Hence option A correctly identifies the social and economic problem behind the riots. Memory cue: Deccan Riots 1875 means indebted peasants versus moneylenders.
