Colonial Rule and Pastoral Life

Correct answer: A. Many restrictions were placed on their movement and grazing

Colonial rules limited pastoralists' free grazing and movement. Exam tip: remember both restrictions and taxes.

Correct answer: B. Waste land

The government saw such land as waste and wanted it under cultivation. Exam tip: connect Waste Land rules with pastures.

Correct answer: A. Grazing areas began to shrink

The direct answer is option A: grazing areas began to shrink. Waste Land rules treated certain lands as unused or unproductive from the colonial administration’s viewpoint. Such land could be taken under government control and encouraged or converted for cultivation, plantations, or other revenue-producing uses. Step by step, land formerly available for seasonal grazing was reclassified or occupied; less open land remained for herders; animals had less fodder and pastoral movement became harder. Option A is correct because it states the main effect on pastoral space. Option B is wrong because the rules did not generally give pastoralists more forests; forest access was often restricted. Option C is wrong because these rules did not end all taxes. Option D is wrong because animals still needed food, water, and grazing. The phrase “waste” reflected official judgement, not proof that the land had no value: pastoralists often depended on it. Exam cue: Waste Land rules usually mean conversion of grazing land and pressure on pastoral livelihoods.

Correct answer: A. Because cultivation could increase land revenue

The direct answer is A: because cultivation could increase land revenue. Colonial governments sought revenue to run their administration and support their economic interests. Cultivated land could be assessed, and farmers could be charged land revenue or taxes. The reasoning is: bring more land under cultivation, produce taxable agricultural output, assess the land or crop, and collect more revenue. Option A is correct because it states the main financial motive tested here. Option B is not the stated reason: ending pastoralism and seeking sea trade does not explain why cultivation itself produced revenue. Option C is factually absurd because forests did contain trees; it gives no economic explanation. Option D is an unsupported personal claim and does not explain a government land policy. Expanding cultivation could also supply commercial crops and raw materials, but the direct answer in this question is increased land revenue. Memory cue: colonial cultivation expansion was closely linked to tax and revenue.

Correct answer: B. Grazing and use of wood and grass in forests

Forest laws controlled entry and resource use in forests. Exam tip: connect Forest Acts with grazing restrictions.

Correct answer: B. Grazing and entry were strictly restricted

The direct answer is B: grazing and entry were strictly restricted in reserved forests. Colonial forest departments declared some forests reserved for state-controlled purposes and sharply limited customary community use. Pastoralists could lose ordinary access, need permission, face fixed routes or seasons, and have difficulty finding fodder. Option B is correct because it describes this stronger control. Option A is the opposite of the historical situation: people could not graze everywhere without rules. Option C is wrong because reserved forests did not generally provide free land to pastoralists. Option D is wrong because the policy did not give every animal tax exemption. The exact restriction could vary, but the central exam concept is clear: reserved forest meant limited access and controlled grazing. Remember: reserved means the government reserved control, not free use for everyone.

Correct answer: A. Limited grazing with some conditions

Some rights could be allowed in protected forests in a limited way. Exam tip: understand reserved and protected forest differences.

Correct answer: B. Tax imposed on grazing animals

Under colonial rule many pastoralists had to pay tax for grazing. Exam tip: connect tax with economic burden.

Correct answer: A. Their economic burden increased

A grazing tax is a payment demanded for using pasture or forest areas for animals. When pastoralists had to pay this tax, money or part of their earnings had to be set aside before they could meet other household and animal-care needs. The tax therefore increased the cost of maintaining livestock and placed pressure on their livelihood. If income was uncertain because of weather, disease, or limited access to pasture, the burden could become even more serious.

The other choices do not describe the normal effect of a tax. It did not provide free fodder, remove every difficulty, or turn pastoralists into forest officers. The key economic relationship is simple: an added compulsory payment reduces the amount available for family use, trade, and animal care. Thus option A is correct because grazing tax increased the economic burden on pastoralists.

Correct answer: A. Because they did not live permanently in one place

Colonial administration found settled populations easier to control. Exam tip: remember the idea of control.

Correct answer: A. Declaring some nomadic communities criminal

This law viewed many mobile communities with suspicion. Exam tip: remember it as a stigmatizing law.

Correct answer: A. Surveillance and control over them increased

The law recorded many communities as criminal-like groups. Exam tip: treat surveillance and control as key effects.

Correct answer: A. Permission for movement and grazing

Pastoralists often needed permission to enter or graze in areas. Exam tip: connect permits with control of movement.

Correct answer: B. Number of animals and period of stay in an area

Permits helped the government monitor pastoralists' activity. Exam tip: understand permits as a tool of surveillance.

Correct answer: A. Many groups searched for new routes and pastures

Direct answer: Option A is correct. When colonial forest laws reduced grazing land and restricted old routes, pastoralists did not all abandon their occupation. They adjusted their lives to the new conditions. They searched for different routes, moved towards other available pastures, changed the timing of seasonal movement, and sometimes reduced the size of their herds. Thus, the exact reasoning is: forest laws caused less access to forests; less access created a grazing problem; the pastoralists responded by adapting and finding alternatives. Option A is correct because it describes this practical response. Option B is wrong because the word “all” is false: many pastoralists continued pastoralism in changed ways. Option C is impossible and unrelated because the sea cannot provide ordinary grazing land. Option D is wrong because animals still needed fodder; stopping feeding them would harm or kill them, not solve the problem. Memory cue: restriction led to adaptation, not complete abandonment.

Correct answer: A. Freedom of unrestricted movement and grazing

Under colonial rule, forests were reserved, grazing grounds were restricted, and pastoralists’ movements were monitored. They could no longer move freely with their herds from one pasture to another according to the seasons. Therefore, the freedom of unrestricted movement and grazing declined the most. Choosing a village head was not the main form of colonial control over pastoral life in this chapter. Exam tip: link reserved forests, loss of grazing land, and restrictions on movement.

Correct answer: A. Shortage of fodder and weakness could increase

Reduced pastures affected animals' food. Exam tip: understand the link between pasture and animal health.

Correct answer: A. For timber, revenue and administrative control

Forests were economically and administratively important for the government. Exam tip: link forest control with resources and revenue.

Correct answer: B. Pastoral communities

Direct answer: Option B, pastoral communities. Pastoralists depend on grazing land to feed their animals. In the colonial period, many common pastures were taken over or converted into cultivated fields because authorities and landholders wanted more land under settled agriculture and more revenue. When pasture became farmland, pastoral communities lost access to grazing areas and had to travel farther, reduce herds, buy fodder or change their livelihood. This could also create conflict and increase costs. Option B is correct because pastoralists directly depended on those pastures. Option A is wrong because forest officers were officials involved in administration and were not the group whose livelihood depended on grazing land in this way. Option C is wrong because sea traders did not rely on inland pastures for their main occupation. Option D is wrong because palace builders were unrelated to pastoral grazing needs. The reasoning is: pasture converted to fields → grazing space decreases → livestock feeding becomes difficult → pastoral livelihood suffers. Memory cue: when common grazing land disappears, pastoralists bear the direct loss.

Correct answer: A. Because grazing areas and resources had reduced

Colonial policies reduced the land available for grazing. Forest laws, reserved forests, cultivation, and restrictions on movement meant that pastoralists could not freely use earlier grazing grounds. When fodder and water become limited, a large herd becomes difficult to feed and manage. Reducing the herd can therefore be a practical response to shrinking resources, not a sign that animals have lost all value.

Option A is correct because it directly connects fewer grazing areas and resources with the need to keep fewer animals. Options B, C, and D do not explain the historical situation: animal prices did not become zero, forests were not all opened, and animals did not leave for the sea. The key idea is that colonial control over land made pastoral livelihoods harder.

Correct answer: A. Sometimes they found new pastures and alternative work

The direct answer is A: pastoralists sometimes found new pastures and alternative work to cope with colonial restrictions. Their usual routes could be blocked by forest laws, pasture conversion, taxes, or permits. They therefore adapted in different ways: changing migration routes, searching for grazing grounds, reducing or changing herds, trading, working in agriculture, or taking other employment. Option A is correct because it gives two genuine examples of adaptation. Option B is absurd and unrelated; pastoralists did not begin living in the sea. Option C is wrong because selling all animals and becoming kings was not a general response. Option D is wrong because observing seasons remained important for planning movement and grazing. The word “sometimes” matters: different groups responded differently. Exam cue: restrictions did not end pastoralism immediately; people adjusted their livelihoods.

Correct answer: A. To control their movement

Colonial administration wanted to control mobile communities. Exam tip: treat control as a key idea.

Correct answer: A. Some routes were closed or restricted

The direct answer is option A: some traditional routes were closed or restricted. Pastoral routes were not random roads; they were seasonal paths linking grazing grounds, water sources, and markets. Colonial forest laws, borders, reserved forests, permits, and cultivation could block or limit these paths. The reasoning is: legal control changed access; changed access interrupted seasonal movement; interrupted movement made it harder to feed animals and continue pastoral work. Option A is correct because it accurately describes partial closure or restriction without claiming every route disappeared. Option B is wrong because colonial controls generally reduced free movement rather than opening every route. Option C is wrong because pastoral routes remained closely related to seasons, rainfall, grass, and water. Option D is wrong because land routes did not all become sea routes. Remember that pastoralists might still adapt by changing routes, paying fees, or seeking permits, but adaptation does not mean freedom remained unchanged. Exam cue: colonial law often meant restricted mobility, not the end of all pastoralism.

Correct answer: A. When they grazed without permission in restricted forests

Old common rights could become offences under new laws. Exam tip: understand the clash between law and custom.

Correct answer: A. It was easier to collect taxes and control them

Colonial governments preferred people who lived permanently in one place because such populations were easier to see, count, record, tax, and supervise. Nomadic pastoralists moved with their animals according to seasons, water, and pasture. Their movement made regular taxation and administrative control more difficult. Settled agriculture also fitted the colonial preference for fixed villages and clearly identified landholders.

Option A is correct because collecting taxes and exercising control are the main administrative reasons. The other choices are false or nonsensical. Settled peasants did not necessarily avoid taxes, nomadic people were not always hidden in forests, and farming did not take place in the sea. The question tests why colonial rule valued fixed settlement over mobile pastoral life.
