Colonial Rule and Pastoral Life

Correct answer: A. More land revenue

The government wanted to increase revenue by expanding cultivation. Exam tip: see revenue as a main aim of colonial policy.

Correct answer: C. Pastoralists and villagers dependent on forests

Pastoralists depended on forests for fodder and routes. Exam tip: connect reserved forests with dependent communities.

Correct answer: D. In notified villages or places

This law confined nomadic communities to notified areas. Exam tip: connect fixed residence with surveillance.

Correct answer: A. To regulate pastoralists’ movement and entry into forests

The colonial government sought to monitor and control the movement of pastoralists. As forests were reserved and access to them was restricted, pastoralists could require passes or permits to travel along specified routes and at specified times. Therefore, the correct answer is regulation of movement and entry into forests. A licence to sell goods in a market is a different arrangement, not the main purpose of the pass system. Exam tip: link colonial passes with surveillance and control of movement.

Correct answer: A. They increased control and pressure on pastoralists

All three policies made pastoral livelihood difficult. Exam tip: write the combined impact of different policies.

Correct answer: A. Because settled people were easier to monitor and tax

The colonial state wanted a controllable population. Exam tip: connect settlement with surveillance and revenue.

Correct answer: A. Cost of livelihood

Animals were the basis of their livelihood and taxing them was costly. Exam tip: understand animal tax as economic pressure.

Correct answer: C. Duration of stay in the forest

Forest permits could control entry, grazing and duration of stay. Exam tip: remember control over time.

Correct answer: D. To fix grazing tax

Counting animals was important because the tax was connected with the size of a pastoralist’s herd. Pastoralists owned different numbers of cattle, sheep, goats or other animals, and a larger herd could lead to a larger grazing-tax demand. An official count gave the government a basis for assessing and collecting the tax. This also shows how colonial policies turned a traditional livelihood into an activity that was measured and controlled by officials.

Option D is correct because it directly connects animal counting with fixing the amount of grazing tax. The other choices have no sensible relation to government administration: animals were not counted to make them sing, send them to school or take them to the sea. The key reasoning is simple: if tax depends on the number of animals, the government must first know how many animals are present. Therefore D follows.

Correct answer: A. Obtaining fodder.

Colonial forest laws often restricted access to forests by reserving them, regulating entry and limiting grazing or the collection of forest produce. Pastoralists consequently lost or were denied areas where animals could feed on grass, leaves and other vegetation. The immediate animal need identified in the question is therefore fodder, making option A correct. Reading books, opening markets and sea travel are not biological needs of livestock and do not explain the effect of forest restrictions. The broader historical point is that colonial control of forests disrupted pastoral livelihoods by reducing access to essential grazing and fodder resources.

Correct answer: A. Seasonal herding and grazing

Pastoralists' life was based on seasonal grazing. Exam tip: connect seasonal herding with colonial impact.

Correct answer: A. Control over entry and grazing in forest laws

Forest laws restricted access to forests and pastures. Exam tip: connect forest law with reduced freedom.

Correct answer: C. Revenue

The direct answer is C: the colonial government wanted to increase revenue. When pastures were converted into cultivated fields, the government could assess land and collect revenue from farming. The chain is: more cultivation created more taxable land; taxes or land revenue increased government income; therefore expansion of cultivation served a financial aim. Option C is correct. Option A is wrong because sea water is unrelated to converting land into farms. Option B is wrong because colonial forest and land policies generally reduced local freedom rather than increasing forest freedom. Option D is wrong because the policy was not designed to increase animal numbers without limit; in fact, loss of pasture often harmed pastoralism. Remember: colonial authorities often valued settled cultivation because it made land easier to measure and tax.

Correct answer: A. Old pastures were restricted or converted to cultivation

As old resources declined, pastoralists had to change routes. Exam tip: connect pasture loss with route change.

Correct answer: A. Reduction of open grazing land and movement

The direct answer is option A: open grazing land and movement were reduced. Pastoralists depend on seasonal movement to take animals to places with grass and water. Under colonial rule, forests were reserved, grazing was restricted, and land was converted to cultivation or other official uses. Step by step, less common grazing land meant less fodder; permits and boundaries limited movement; restricted movement made seasonal herding difficult and threatened livelihood. Option A is correct because it combines the two connected problems: loss of grazing space and reduced mobility. Option B is wrong because the sea coming near has no normal connection with colonial pastoral policy. Option C is wrong because closure of textile mills is not the central problem described here and does not explain pastoral movement. Option D is wrong because an increase in schools was not the major livelihood challenge in this context. Exam cue: colonial pastoral difficulties usually involve forests, grazing land, permits, taxes, and movement.

Correct answer: A. Their social image was harmed

The direct answer is A: the Criminal Tribes Act harmed pastoralists’ social image and dignity. Under colonial rule, several nomadic and mobile communities were officially labelled as criminal by birth or by community, leading to surveillance, registration, restrictions, and public suspicion. The reasoning is: a legal label created distrust; distrust produced humiliation and discrimination; therefore dignity and social reputation suffered. Option A is correct. Option B is wrong because the Act did not make these communities kings. Option C is wrong because it did not give them tax exemption. Option D is wrong because the Act restricted movement rather than making it fully free. The law’s label was deeply unjust; do not confuse an official accusation with proof that every person was a criminal. Memory cue: Criminal Tribes Act means stigma, surveillance, and restricted mobility.

Correct answer: A. Pass

The direct answer is option A: a pass. A pass was an official document or permit that could be required for entry into or movement through certain forests and grazing areas. Forest laws created controlled zones, so officials could record, regulate, and monitor who entered. The reasoning is: forest rules restricted free access; restricted access required permission; the permission was shown through a pass. Option A is correct because it names that administrative document. Option B is wrong because a sea map concerns navigation, not permission to graze in a forest. Option C is wrong because a poem has no legal function. Option D is wrong because a cloth bill records a purchase and does not authorise forest entry. The pass could also be connected with fees, dates, routes, or conditions, depending on the particular rule. Do not confuse it with a general identity paper: the important exam idea is official permission and surveillance of movement. Memory cue: forest law plus controlled entry equals pass.

Correct answer: A. Source of fodder, water and routes

The direct answer is A: a source of fodder, water and routes. Forests supported pastoral life in several ways, not merely through wood. Animals could eat leaves, grass and other vegetation; people could obtain or reach water; and forest paths connected seasonal grazing places. The reasoning is: pastoralists moved with herds, herds needed food and water, and movement required usable routes, so forests were an important living resource. Option A is correct because it names three practical needs of pastoralists. Option B, a sea port, is a coastal trade facility and is not the ordinary function of a forest. Option C, a factory, is a production building, not a natural forest resource. Option D, a capital, is a political city and does not describe pastoral use of forests. Restrictions on forests therefore affected food, water access and movement, not only wood collection. Memory cue: for pastoralists, forest means fodder, water and passage.

Correct answer: A. For tax, surveillance and resource control

The colonial state wanted to control people and resources. Exam tip: link mobility control with revenue and surveillance.

Correct answer: A. Colonial revenue policy

The British government wanted revenue from pastoral life too. Exam tip: connect grazing tax with revenue policy.

Correct answer: A. Forests were reserved and grazing lands were converted to cultivation.

Colonial policies changed land use in ways that restricted pastoral mobility. Forests were declared reserved or protected, reducing customary access for grazing, while other open areas were brought under cultivation or commercial land management. Together, these changes narrowed the routes and spaces available to herds. Option A is correct because it identifies both major causes stated in the historical account. Option B is unrelated to the loss of grazing land, option C is biologically and historically absurd, and option D reverses the actual trend: fields were increasingly used for cultivation rather than being converted into universal pastures. The result was pressure on pastoral livelihoods.

Correct answer: A. Criminal Tribes Act

The Criminal Tribes Act treated many communities as criminals by birth. Exam tip: remember the effect of this law.

Correct answer: A. Forest laws, Wasteland Rules, grazing tax and surveillance

The direct answer is A: forest laws, Wasteland Rules, grazing tax and surveillance together explain pastoralists’ hardship under colonial rule. Pastoralists depend on moving herds to find seasonal grass and water. Colonial policies restricted this way of life in several connected ways. Forest laws reserved or controlled forests and reduced access to grazing; Wasteland Rules brought land under government control or encouraged its conversion to settled cultivation, reducing open grazing areas; grazing taxes made keeping animals more costly; permits, officials and surveillance restricted movement and increased fear of punishment. The complete chain is: less access to land and forests plus taxes and control; reduced fodder and mobility; weaker herds and higher expenses; loss of income and greater hardship. Option A is correct because it gives the major related causes together. Option B is wrong because sea trade alone does not explain pastoral hardship. Option C is wrong because festivals were not the main colonial policy causing these widespread restrictions. Option D is wrong because textile mills alone cannot account for loss of grazing routes, taxes and forest access. Exam cue: remember colonial control as land restriction + grazing tax + movement surveillance.

Correct answer: A. Changing routes, reducing animals or finding new work

Due to new restrictions pastoralists had to adapt. Exam tip: connect change with livelihood strategy.

Correct answer: A. British policies affected pastoralists' land, forests, taxes and movement

This subtopic shows that colonial rule deeply changed pastoral life. Exam tip: write the relation between policy and livelihood.
