Which of the following trinomials can be factorised into the product of two identical binomials?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: \(x^2-10x+25\)

The direct answer is A: \(x^2-10x+25=(x-5)^2=(x-5)(x-5)\). A trinomial is a perfect-square trinomial when its first and last terms are squares and its middle term is twice the product of their square roots. Here, \(x^2=(x)^2\), \(25=(-5)^2\), and \(2(x)(-5)=-10x\). Therefore all three terms match the identity \(a^2+2ab+b^2=(a+b)^2\). Option B has constant term 20, which is not the required square 25. Option C has the wrong sign and also has 20 instead of 25. Option D has constant term \(-25\), so it cannot be the square of a real linear binomial with these terms. Memory cue: for \(x^2+bx+c\), take the square root of \(c\) and check whether twice that number gives the middle coefficient.
