Birth of the Weimar Republic

Correct answer: B. Weimar Republic

The monarchy ended in 1918 when Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated. Germany then became a republic, which came to be known as the Weimar Republic.

Correct answer: C. The throne

In 1918, Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated, meaning that he gave up the throne. His abdication marked the end of the German monarchy.

Correct answer: D. Weimar

The National Assembly met in Weimar in 1919 and drafted the republic's constitution there. The republic took its name from the city where the assembly met.

Correct answer: B. Right to vote

The Weimar Constitution granted universal adult franchise, meaning that adult citizens had the right to vote and elect their representatives. This was an important democratic feature of the Weimar Republic. The right to collect feudal taxes belonged to the older feudal system, not to a democratic constitution. Exam tip: Remember the Weimar Republic for universal adult franchise and parliamentary democracy.

Correct answer: C. Reichstag

In the Weimar Republic, the German parliament was called the Reichstag. Its elected members debated laws and supervised the work of the government. Diet is a term used for legislatures in some other countries, so it is not correct here. Exam tip: link the Weimar German parliament with the Reichstag.

Correct answer: D. The republic was blamed for national humiliation and defeat

The Treaty of Versailles, signed in 1919, imposed harsh terms on Germany. Because Weimar leaders accepted it, many Germans associated the republic with national humiliation and blamed it for the defeat.

Correct answer: A. First World War

The direct answer is A: First World War. The Treaty of Versailles was the peace treaty imposed on Germany after Germany and its allies lost the First World War. The war ended in 1918, and the treaty was signed in 1919 at Versailles, near Paris. Germany had to accept responsibility for the war, reduce its military, give up territory, and pay reparations. Therefore, the time order is: First World War, German defeat, and then Treaty of Versailles. Option A is correct because it names the war directly connected with the treaty. Option B, the Second World War, is wrong because that war happened later, from 1939 to 1945; it ended with different agreements and did not lead to the Treaty of Versailles. Option C, the Korean War, occurred much later, mainly from 1950 to 1953, and concerned Korea, not the post-First-World-War settlement. Option D, the Vietnam War, also occurred later and was unrelated to this treaty. Remember: Versailles means 1919 and the settlement after the First World War.

Correct answer: B. War guilt clause

It was called the War Guilt Clause. Article 231 of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles assigned Germany and its allies responsibility for causing the war-related losses for which reparations were claimed.

Correct answer: C. War reparations

The direct answer is C: war reparations. The Treaty of Versailles, signed after the First World War, placed heavy responsibilities on Germany. The war guilt clause held Germany responsible for the war, and this political judgment was connected with the demand that Germany pay reparations, meaning money or other compensation for war damage. These payments and related burdens increased anger and economic pressure in Germany. Option C is correct because reparations were the compensation demanded from the defeated country. Option A is wrong because Germany was not given rewards for the war; it was treated as a defeated power. Option B is wrong because a farm tax is a different kind of domestic tax and was not the main payment meant by the treaty. Option D is wrong because a sports fee has no connection with an international peace treaty or war damage. Do not confuse reparations with ordinary taxes: reparations are payments imposed after conflict to compensate for destruction. Memory cue: Versailles, blame, reparations, and resentment form one important chain in the history of the Weimar Republic.

Correct answer: D. Treaty of Versailles

Weimar leaders accepted the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. Many Germans therefore associated the republic with the treaty's harsh terms and blamed its leaders for accepting them.

Correct answer: A. It was marked by political and economic crises

Correct answer: A. The Weimar Republic began in Germany after the defeat of 1918 and the end of the imperial monarchy. The country faced political conflict, revolutionary unrest, social tension and the difficult task of creating a democratic government. It also had serious economic burdens, including reparations and later inflation, while many citizens experienced insecurity and hardship. These conditions made the new Republic vulnerable to criticism from both the left and the right. B is wrong because the period was not completely peaceful. C is wrong because Germany was not simply rich and stable after the war. D is wrong because colonial victories were not the central condition of Germany in 1918. The key lesson is that a new democracy born during defeat and crisis has to build legitimacy while solving urgent problems. Memory cue: Weimar began with defeat, disorder and economic strain.

Correct answer: B. Monarchy

The direct answer is B: the 1918 revolution ended the German monarchy. Germany had been ruled by Kaiser Wilhelm II, but military defeat and political unrest during the First World War led to his abdication. A republic was then established, and its constitution was later associated with Weimar. Option B is correct because monarchy means rule by a king or emperor, and that system ended in 1918. A is wrong because the revolution did not end a republic; it helped create one. C is wrong because democracy was the new form being established, not the system abolished. D is wrong because parliament was not ended; representative institutions continued, although the new republic later faced serious difficulties. The safest exam chain is: defeat in 1918 → Kaiser abdicated → monarchy ended → republic formed. Memory cue: 1918 means the end of the Kaiser’s monarchy.

Correct answer: C. Defeat

The Weimar Republic emerged in 1918–19 after Germany had been defeated in the First World War. Defeat, Kaiser Wilhelm II’s abdication, and political instability created major problems for the new republican government. Colonial expansion was not Germany’s wartime outcome; Germany also lost its colonies. Exam tip: remember the Weimar Republic as the post-First World War system formed after Germany’s defeat.

Correct answer: D. November criminals

Opponents called them “November criminals,” blaming the republic's supporters for Germany's defeat and the 1918 armistice, and for accepting the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.

Correct answer: A. Leaders who supported the Weimar Republic

Direct answer: Option A is correct. “November criminals” was a hostile label used by opponents of the Weimar Republic for the German politicians who accepted the armistice in November 1918 and were associated with the new republican government. Right-wing nationalists falsely or unfairly blamed them for Germany’s defeat and the Treaty of Versailles, spreading the stab-in-the-back idea. The label was political propaganda, not a neutral legal description: those leaders had not literally committed a crime called the November crime. Option A works because it identifies the pro-Weimar leaders targeted by the insult. Option B is wrong because foreign farmers were not the intended group. Option C is wrong because Roman soldiers belong to ancient history, not post-First-World-War Germany. Option D is wrong because school children were not the political targets of the term. Remember that many Germans resented the republic because it was linked in propaganda with defeat, reparations, and Versailles. Memory cue: November criminals = anti-Weimar blame after 1918.

Correct answer: B. Many parties entered parliament

The direct answer is B: proportional representation allowed many political parties to win seats in parliament. Under this system, seats are distributed more closely according to the share of votes received, so smaller parties can gain representation instead of only the largest party winning most seats. In the Weimar Republic, this produced a fragmented parliament and often made coalition governments necessary. Option B is correct because many parties entered the Reichstag. A is wrong because proportional representation does not create only one party; it usually permits several parties. C is wrong because Germany was a republic, not a monarchy with a king becoming stronger. D is wrong because elections continued. The system itself was democratic, although fragmentation and unstable coalitions created political problems. Memory cue: proportional votes mean proportionate seats, therefore many parties.

Correct answer: C. Because coalition governments were weak

Direct answer: Option C is correct. Governments in the Weimar Republic often changed because many political parties competed in parliament and coalition governments were difficult to keep united. A coalition is a government formed by two or more parties when no single party has a majority. The reasoning is step by step: several parties won seats; no party could easily control parliament alone; parties had different aims; disagreements weakened coalitions; when a coalition lost support, the government had to resign or be replaced. This produced political instability and made it harder for citizens to see democracy as strong and effective. Option A is wrong because the Weimar Republic did have a parliament, called the Reichstag. Option B is wrong because Germany was a republic after the emperor abdicated; a king was not ruling the country. Option C is correct because weak coalitions explain frequent changes most directly. Option D is wrong because elections did take place, and election results helped determine the composition of parliament. The problem was not the complete absence of elections but the difficulty of turning divided results into a stable majority. Memory cue: many parties plus no stable majority equals fragile coalition and frequent government change.

Correct answer: A. Article 48

Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution gave the President wide emergency powers, including the power to suspend civil rights and govern through decrees in an emergency. Article 25 concerned dissolving the Reichstag, so it is a close but incorrect option. Exam tip: associate Weimar emergency powers with Article 48.

Correct answer: B. Because there was political instability and emergency powers

The direct answer is B: political instability and emergency powers weakened democracy. The Weimar Republic was created in Germany after the Kaiser’s monarchy ended. It had a constitution and elections, but democratic institutions faced serious pressure. Governments often depended on unstable coalitions, so they could fall quickly. Article 48 also allowed the President to use emergency powers and rule by decree in a crisis; repeated use weakened parliamentary democracy and made authoritarian rule easier. Option B is correct because it combines the two major weaknesses. Option A is wrong because the republic did have a constitution. Option C is wrong because Germany was not governed by an elected king; it had a republican system. Option D is wrong because citizens did have voting rights under the democratic system, although democracy was troubled. Memory cue: Weimar weakness = unstable coalitions plus Article 48.

Correct answer: C. Many parties produced by proportional representation

Correct answer: C. Under proportional representation, parties gained seats broadly according to the share of votes they received. This allowed several political parties to enter the Reichstag instead of leaving power with only two large parties. Since no party often won a clear majority, governments had to be formed through coalitions. Coalition partners could disagree about policies, withdraw support or cause a government to fall. This made parliamentary government appear unstable, even though the electoral system was designed to represent different opinions. A is wrong because the presence of many parties, not one-party rule, was the relevant problem. B is wrong because the Weimar Republic was a democracy, not an absolute monarchy. D is wrong because foreign colonies did not directly create this parliamentary difficulty. Memory cue: proportional representation means wider representation, but often more coalition bargaining.

Correct answer: D. Communism

Correct answer: D. The Spartacists were a revolutionary socialist group in Germany led by figures such as Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht. Their uprising in January 1919 was influenced by the Russian Revolution and aimed at a workers’ revolution rather than a liberal parliamentary settlement. They supported communist ideas, including workers’ political power and a transformation of the existing social and economic order. A is wrong because a liberal monarchy combines constitutional monarchy with liberal politics and was not the Spartacists’ goal. B is wrong because fascism was a different authoritarian ideology that later opposed communists. C is wrong because imperialism concerns the expansion and domination of territories, not the Spartacist programme. Memory cue: Spartacists were on the revolutionary left; associate “Spartacist” with communism and workers’ councils.

Correct answer: A. The Free Corps

Correct answer: A. The Spartacist uprising took place in Berlin in January 1919 during the unsettled period when the Weimar Republic was being formed. The government used the Freikorps, or Free Corps, to help suppress the revolt. These were armed paramilitary formations largely made up of demobilised or former soldiers who were strongly anti-communist. Their involvement showed how dependent the new government could be on forces outside a regular democratic army and also revealed the violence surrounding the Republic’s birth. B is wrong because the Reichstag was the elected legislature, not a paramilitary force. C is wrong because the League of Nations was an international organisation and did not suppress this uprising. D is wrong because the Nazi Youth was a later youth organisation, not the force used in January 1919. Memory cue: Free Corps means ex-soldier paramilitary units used against the Spartacists.

Correct answer: B. Former soldiers

Correct answer: B. The Free Corps, or Freikorps, were paramilitary groups formed largely from demobilised soldiers and veterans after the First World War. Many members had military experience, weapons and a strong anti-communist outlook. The German government used them against revolutionary groups such as the Spartacists in the early years of the Weimar Republic. Their existence also reflected the disorder and political violence of post-war Germany. A is wrong because school children did not form these armed veteran units. C is wrong because farmers were not the defining membership group. D is wrong because traders were not the main basis of the organisation. The phrase “former soldiers” identifies both their social origin and their military character. Memory cue: Free Corps = free-standing veteran militias, not a school or civilian association.

Correct answer: C. Soviet-style system

Inspired by the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, the Spartacists sought a Soviet-style republic based on workers' councils, rather than a monarchy or military dictatorship.

Correct answer: D. From both the left and the right

The Weimar Republic faced opposition from both sides: revolutionary groups on the left, including communists, and nationalist and other conservative groups on the right.
