Birth of the Weimar Republic

Correct answer: A. Germany’s defeat in the First World War

A is correct. Germany’s defeat in the First World War in 1918 was followed by the end of the monarchy and the establishment of a democratic republic, known as the Weimar Republic.

Correct answer: A. The monarchy ended and the way opened for a republic

A is correct. Wilhelm II abdicated in November 1918, bringing the German monarchy to an end and opening the way for the republic proclaimed that month.

Correct answer: A. Weimar

Correct answer: A, Weimar. After the German monarchy ended following the First World War, representatives met in the city of Weimar to frame a new democratic constitution. The National Assembly met there because Berlin was affected by political unrest, and the new republic later became known as the Weimar Republic after this place. A is correct because Weimar was the meeting place and gave the republic its familiar historical name. B is wrong because Rome is the capital associated with Italy, not the assembly of the new German republic. C is wrong because London is in Britain. D is wrong because Paris is in France. The question asks for the place where the assembly met, not the country in which the republic existed. Memory cue: assembly at Weimar, republic named Weimar.

Correct answer: A. A democratic republic

A is correct. The Weimar Constitution of 1919 established Germany as a democratic republic, replacing the former imperial monarchy with a system based on elected institutions.

Correct answer: A. By people's votes

The direct answer is A: Reichstag representatives were chosen by the people’s votes. The Reichstag was the elected parliament of Germany during the Weimar Republic. In a representative democracy, citizens vote for representatives, and those representatives discuss laws and government matters in the legislature. Therefore, the constitutional idea being tested is popular representation through elections. Option A is correct because Reichstag members were elected by voters under the Weimar Constitution; the voting system was broad for its time, including women. Option B is wrong because Germany was a republic, not a monarchy in which a king selected the parliament. Option C is wrong because the army did not legally choose all parliamentary representatives. Option D is wrong because industrialists were only one social group and had no exclusive right to select the Reichstag. The key distinction is between an elected parliament and an appointed body. Remember: Reichstag means the German parliament; in the Weimar Republic, parliament was linked to voting, not royal, military or business appointment.

Correct answer: A. All citizens aged 20 and above

A is correct. Under the Weimar Constitution of 1919, citizens aged 20 and above could vote; the right was not limited to a privileged group.

Correct answer: A. The right to vote

A is correct. The Weimar Constitution of 1919 recognized women’s right to vote on equal terms with men. German women first voted in the January 1919 National Assembly election.

Correct answer: A. It included guilt reparations and military limits

The direct answer is A: the Treaty of Versailles imposed war-guilt responsibility, reparations, territorial and military restrictions on Germany. After the First World War, Germany had to accept responsibility for the war, pay compensation, reduce its armed forces, and give up territory and colonies. These terms caused anger, economic pressure, and humiliation, especially because many Germans blamed the new Weimar government for accepting them. Option A is correct because it names the central harsh features, though the full treaty included several other restrictions too. B is wrong because Germany was defeated, not made the winner. C is wrong because Germany lost territory rather than receiving a new empire. D is wrong because the treaty did not remove all taxes; taxation was not its defining effect. Exam cue: Versailles means guilt, reparations, territorial loss, and military limits.

Correct answer: A. Responsibility for starting the war

The direct answer is A: the clause accused Germany of responsibility for starting the war. The War Guilt Clause, commonly identified as Article 231 of the Treaty of Versailles, placed responsibility for the war and related losses on Germany and its allies. Step by step: the First World War ended with Germany’s defeat; the peace settlement assigned responsibility; this responsibility supported demands for reparations; many Germans considered the wording and penalties humiliating. Option A is correct because it states the accusation associated with war guilt. Option B is wrong because the clause did not accuse Germany of saving democracy. Option C is wrong because Germany was not accused of writing the treaty; the victorious powers prepared the settlement. Option D is wrong because it did not say Germany was responsible for helping the Allies win. The clause became a powerful symbol in German politics, and Nazi propaganda used resentment over it to attack the Weimar Republic and the postwar settlement. The wording should be understood historically: it assigned responsibility in the treaty framework, while the causes of the First World War were complex. Exam cue: “War Guilt Clause = blame for the war,” not responsibility for democracy, treaty writing, or Allied victory.

Correct answer: A. Paying war reparations

Correct answer: A, paying war reparations. The Treaty of Versailles placed responsibility for war-related damages on Germany and required it to make reparations, meaning payments to compensate the victorious Allied powers for losses caused by the First World War. These obligations, together with territorial losses and other restrictions, became a source of anger and economic pressure in Germany. A is correct because reparations were the specified financial burden. B is wrong because Germany was required to pay, not to lend money to the Allies. C is wrong because the treaty did not abolish all German taxes; governments still needed revenue. D is wrong because Germany lost colonies and was not instructed to buy a new one. Memory cue: Versailles meant reparations—payments linked to war damage—and this burden fed resentment against the new republic.

Correct answer: A. Because it was associated with Germany's defeat and the Treaty of Versailles

The Weimar Republic was established after Germany's defeat in the First World War. Because its leaders signed the Treaty of Versailles, many Germans blamed the new republic for national humiliation and the treaty's harsh terms. Option C is incorrect because the Weimar Republic adopted a constitution in 1919. Exam tip: link hostility towards the Weimar Republic with defeat, the Treaty of Versailles, and later economic crises.

Correct answer: A. For supporters of the Weimar government

The direct answer is A: “November criminals” was a hostile term used for supporters and leaders of the Weimar government. In November 1918, Germany accepted the armistice and the monarchy collapsed. Nationalist and later Nazi opponents blamed the new republican politicians for Germany’s defeat and the Treaty of Versailles, even though the term was a political insult rather than an objective description of crime. Option A is correct because it identifies the people targeted by this label. Option B is wrong because German children were not the political group meant by the expression. Option C is wrong because the term referred to German political opponents, not French farmers. Option D is wrong because British soldiers were foreign military personnel, not supporters of the Weimar government. The label helped spread the false “stab-in-the-back” idea and weakened trust in democracy. Exam cue: November criminals means anti-Weimar insult, not ordinary criminals.

Correct answer: A. Signing of the armistice by the new republican government

The armistice ending the fighting in the First World War was signed on 11 November 1918. Nationalist critics blamed the new republican leaders who accepted it and called them “November criminals.”

Correct answer: A. Use emergency powers, including ruling by decree

Under Article 48, the President could take emergency measures and issue decrees. In the Weimar Republic, this power could be used to govern without normal parliamentary procedures, especially during crises.

Correct answer: A. Many parties and fragile coalition governments

Under proportional representation, parties could gain seats in proportion to their votes, making it easier for several parties to enter the Reichstag. Since no party often won a majority, governments depended on coalitions that could be unstable.

Correct answer: A. Because many small parties entered parliament

Under the system of proportional representation in the Weimar Republic, many small political parties entered parliament. It was difficult for one party to secure a clear majority, so parties had to form coalitions to govern. The emperor did not appoint the government because Germany had become a republic. Exam tip: link the large number of small parties in Weimar Germany with coalition governments and political instability.

Correct answer: A. Political instability

The Weimar Republic faced political instability from its very beginning. Rival political parties, left-wing and right-wing uprisings, and public distrust weakened the new government. Post-war food shortages were social and economic difficulties, but the main early challenge asked here was political instability. Exam tip: associate the early Weimar Republic with political conflict, uprisings, and weak coalition governments.

Correct answer: A. Humiliation and despair

Germany’s defeat in 1918 and the terms imposed by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 left many Germans feeling humiliated and disappointed. This resentment became part of the background to the rise of Nazism.

Correct answer: A. The German army was limited to a maximum of 100,000 soldiers

The Treaty of Versailles (1919) restricted the German army to a maximum of 100,000 soldiers and banned compulsory military service. Germany was also not allowed to keep submarines, and the Rhineland was demilitarised. Exam tip: remember the key military restrictions as 100,000 troops, no conscription, and no submarines.

Correct answer: A. Treaty of Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles, signed in 1919, required the Rhineland to remain demilitarised. This meant Germany was not permitted to station troops there.

Correct answer: A. Germany changed from a monarchy to a republic

In November 1918, the Kaiser’s monarchy ended and Germany became a republic. This change marked the beginning of the Weimar Republic.

Correct answer: A. Because a new democratic system began after war defeat

The direct answer is A: a new democratic system began after Germany’s defeat in the First World War. The Weimar Republic was established in 1918–19 after Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated and the German monarchy collapsed. Germany then adopted a republican constitution with an elected parliament, voting, and political parties. It is called a democratic experiment because this form of government was new for Germany and had to operate during severe economic, social, and political difficulties. Option A is correct because it connects the birth of the republic with the post-war change from monarchy to democracy. Option B is wrong because a king keeping all power describes an absolute monarchy, not a democratic republic. Option C is wrong because democracy requires elections and participation; voting was not simply closed. Option D is wrong because the Weimar system had a parliament called the Reichstag. The republic’s weaknesses and crises do not remove its democratic character at the beginning. Remember: defeat led to the fall of the Kaiser, and the republic followed. Exam cue: Weimar means Germany’s early post-war democratic government, not the old monarchy or the later Nazi dictatorship.

Correct answer: A. निर्वाचित संसद

Under the Weimar Constitution, members of the German parliament, the Reichstag, were elected by the people. An elected parliament representing citizens is a key democratic feature. A hereditary monarchy is the opposite because power passes by birth rather than public choice. Exam tip: associate the Weimar Republic with an elected Reichstag and universal suffrage.

Correct answer: A. War reparations and the loss of territories and resources

A was correct. Under the Treaty of Versailles, signed in 1919, Germany had to pay reparations and lost territory and resources. These obligations and losses added to the economic pressures facing the new republic.

Correct answer: A. Defeat and humiliation

Correct answer: A, defeat and humiliation. Many opponents associated the Weimar Republic with Germany’s defeat in the First World War and with the unpopular Treaty of Versailles. They used the government as a target for blame, even though the republic did not itself cause the military defeat or create all the treaty terms. This political blaming weakened public trust in democracy and helped nationalist and extremist groups gain support. A is correct because defeat and humiliation were the images promoted by opponents. B is wrong because Germany had been defeated, not completely victorious. C is wrong because the treaty reduced Germany’s power and removed colonies rather than symbolising expansion. D is wrong because agricultural prosperity was not the central political association. Memory cue: opponents linked Weimar with defeat and Versailles; this was blame politics, not a complete account of history.
