Why Deforestation?

Correct answer: B. Colonial governments treated forests as resources that could support state power and revenue. Valuable timber was needed for construction, transport and other official or commercial purposes, while forest laws regulated who could enter, cut wood, graze animals or collect products. This combination shows two state interests: earning or securing economic value from timber and controlling the use of forest land. Option B expresses both clearly. A is wrong because colonial control usually reduced community control instead of handing over all forests. C is wrong because forests were exploited and managed for selected purposes, not always left untouched. D is wrong because plantations and commercial forestry were not universally ended. Memory cue: state interest can be seen through revenue plus regulation.

Correct answer: A. Deforestation means more than removing trees for timber or farming; it also changes the living environment of plants and animals. A habitat provides food, shelter, breeding places and routes for movement. When forests are cleared or divided, wildlife may lose these necessities, populations may decline, and ecological relationships can be disturbed. Therefore, the history of deforestation must record both human economic activity and its environmental effects. A is correct because commercial or agricultural use altered ecological balance as well as forest cover. B is wrong because wildlife did not generally cut forests for human economic purposes. C is wrong because animals depend directly on forests. D is wrong because habitat loss is an effect of deforestation, not a cause that stopped it. Memory cue: forest loss affects people, animals and ecosystems together.

Correct answer: A. People living near forests often developed knowledge through repeated experience. They knew which plants could be collected, when particular resources should be used, how animals and water sources were connected, and which practices helped communities meet needs without exhausting every resource. Colonial forest policies frequently preferred official rules, commercial timber and uniform management over this varied local experience. Ignoring it therefore made forest administration one-sided and could harm both livelihoods and ecological balance. A is correct because it recognises the practical value of local knowledge. B is wrong because forest communities knew their surroundings closely. C is wrong because the statement says colonial officials always protected local interests, which is not accurate. D is wrong because knowledge does not automatically remove market demand for timber. Memory cue: local experience explains sustainable use; distant rules may overlook local conditions.

Correct answer: A, because human economic activities changed natural habitats. Deforestation is not a purely natural event. People and governments cleared forests for agriculture, settlements, railways, ships, mines, plantations, and commercial timber. These decisions changed ecosystems and reduced or fragmented the places where wildlife could live. That is why environmental change must be studied together with economic, political, and social history. B is wrong because animals did not create colonial laws. C is wrong because cutting forests directly affects forest habitats. D is wrong because habitat loss is a real environmental consequence, not imagination. Memory cue: human demand changes forests, and changed forests affect wildlife.
