What is the result of \(x\in(-\infty,0]\cap[-3,4)\) on the number line?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: \([-3,0]\)

An intersection contains only the numbers common to both intervals. \((-\infty,0]\) contains all numbers up to and including 0, while \([-3,4)\) contains numbers from -3 up to 4. Their common part is therefore \([-3,0]\). Both -3 and 0 are included in both intervals, so square brackets are used at both ends. Exam tip: For an intersection, keep only the overlap and check endpoint inclusion separately.
