A student wrote \((x+5)^2\) as \(x^2+25\). What is the error in this expansion?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: The middle term \(2\times x\times 5=10x\) has been omitted.

Using \((a+b)^2=a^2+2ab+b^2\), put \(a=x\) and \(b=5\) to get \(x^2+10x+25\). Thus, the \(10x\) middle term is missing. Exam tip: always check the \(2ab\) term.
