जनसंख्या घनत्व
In this Class 9 Geography topic from the chapter Population, students learn how population density measures the number of people living in a unit area, usually per square kilometre. They explore the population-density formula, interpret maps and data, and compare densely and sparsely populated regions. The topic also explains how relief, climate, soil, water availability, transport, industries and employment influence settlement patterns and the distribution of population in India and around the world.

Facilities and resources help people settle. Exam tip: remember favourable factors as a group.
View question detailsHigh density tells only number of people per area not quality of management. Exam tip: understand the limit of an indicator.
View question detailsEven with low density there can be water or service shortage. Exam tip: understand density and resource availability separately.
View question detailsCensus gives an official basis to understand population and area data. Exam tip: treat census as a main source.
View question detailsDensity tells the average number per square kilometre. Exam tip: do not confuse total population with density.
View question detailsBoth unit and area are necessary to understand density. Exam tip: do not hastily treat total number as density.
View question detailsPopulation density is generally expressed as persons per square kilometre. Exam tip: write the unit carefully.
View question detailsDensity is found by dividing total population by total area. Exam tip: remember the formula in the correct order.
View question detailsMore people in a small area make density high. Exam tip: connect more people and less area with high density.
View question detailsPopulation density means the average number of people living in one unit of area, usually one square kilometre. It depends on both population and area, not on population alone. If a very large area contains only a small number of people, those people are spread thinly across the land. The number of people per square kilometre will therefore be small. This is called low population density, even though the region itself may cover a large space.
Option C is correct because few people living in a large area produce a low density. Option A and option B would require many people in relation to the available area. Option D, “equal,” does not describe the level of density and would only be relevant to a comparison between areas. The key relationship is that density decreases when population is small compared with area.
Density shows how concentrated people are in an area. Exam tip: link density with population pressure.
View question detailsIn 2011 India's average population density was 382 persons per square kilometre. Exam tip: remember 2011 and 382 together.
View question detailsTotal population and total area are needed to calculate density. Exam tip: see both figures together.
View question detailsA densely populated area has a large number of people living per unit area; therefore, option A is correct. Option B describes a sparsely populated area, while rural settlements or a declining population do not by themselves determine population density. Exam tip: remember population density as the number of people in relation to area.
View question detailsSparse population means few people over a large area. Exam tip: remember sparse as low density.
View question detailsPlains are favourable for farming settlement and transport. Exam tip: link fertile plains with high density.
View question detailsDesert regions receive very little rainfall, so water is scarce. Extreme temperatures, sparse vegetation, and difficulty in farming also restrict permanent settlement, resulting in low population density. Option B is the opposite of the correct idea because deserts generally have low rainfall. Exam tip: link climate and water availability with population density.
View question detailsHill slopes can make transport and farming difficult. Exam tip: treat relief as a factor of density.
View question detailsCities attract people due to jobs and services. Exam tip: link urban areas with high density.
View question detailsHigh density increases demand for basic services. Exam tip: connect high density with service demand.
