By what name is older alluvium identified in the southern part of the Northern Plains?
Correct answer: D, Bhangar. Alluvium is sediment deposited by rivers. In the Northern Plains, newer alluvium is called Khadar and older alluvium is called Bhangar. Bhangar generally occurs on slightly higher terraces than the newer floodplain, so it is less frequently renewed by annual floods. The question asks specifically about older alluvium, so D is the correct choice. A, Terai, is a wet, marshy belt lying south of the Bhabar region; it is not the name for old alluvial deposits. B, Bhabar, is a porous gravel belt along the Himalayan foothills where streams may disappear underground. C, Khadar, means newer alluvium deposited in the active floodplain, so it is the opposite of what is asked. Memory cue: Khadar is newer and lower; Bhangar is older and on relatively higher ground.
