What type of power is the President's power to grant pardon?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: A — the President’s power to grant pardon is a constitutional power because it is provided by the Constitution. A pardon may remove or reduce the legal effect of a sentence in situations permitted by law. This power is part of the President’s constitutional position and is exercised according to the constitutional system, not as a personal or election-related privilege. Option A is correct because it identifies the legal source and nature of the power. B is wrong because pardon has nothing to do with campaigning or seeking votes. C is wrong because debating in the Lok Sabha is a parliamentary activity, not a presidential pardon. D is wrong because the President’s pardon power is not connected with electing Rajya Sabha members. The power must also be understood within constitutional and legal limits; it does not mean that every punishment can be cancelled arbitrarily. Memory cue: pardon comes from the Constitution, not from elections.
