Let \(f:A\to B\) and \(g:B\to C\) be functions. If the composite function \(g\circ f:A\to C\) is one-one, which of the following conclusions must be true?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: \(f\) is one-one.

If \(f(x_1)=f(x_2)\), then applying \(g\) gives \((g\circ f)(x_1)=(g\circ f)(x_2)\). Since \(g\circ f\) is one-one, we must have \(x_1=x_2\). Hence, \(f\) must be one-one. However, \(g\) need not be one-one because it may take equal values at elements outside the image of \(f\). Exam tip: injectivity of a composite function implies injectivity of the first function.
