Clouds and precipitation

Cumulonimbus clouds form when warm, moist air rises rapidly and becomes unstable, producing strong vertical development, heavy showers, lightning, and sometimes hail. A cold front forces warm air upward abruptly and therefore commonly supports cumulonimbus formation. Gentle uplift or sinking in stable, dry air suppresses deep convective cloud growth.

A warm front has a gently sloping boundary where advancing warm air gradually rises over retreating cooler air. The first cloud often observed at a considerable distance ahead of the surface front is thin, high cirrus, followed in sequence by cirrostratus, altostratus, and lower layered clouds as the front approaches. Thus cirrus can signal the early arrival of moist warm air aloft and an approaching warm-front system, although local weather variations are possible.

Drizzle is light rainfall made of very small water drops. In exams, connect tiny drops and light rain with drizzle.

Rising air cools and changes water vapour into droplets. In exams, treat condensation as the main cloud-forming process.
