What is the range of \(f(x)=\sqrt{x^2+4x+7}\)?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: \([\sqrt{3},\infty)\)

Complete the square inside the square root: \[x^2+4x+7=(x+2)^2+3\] Since \((x+2)^2\ge 0\), we get \((x+2)^2+3\ge 3\). Therefore \[f(x)=\sqrt{(x+2)^2+3}\ge \sqrt{3}\] The minimum value \(\sqrt{3}\) occurs when \((x+2)^2=0\Rightarrow x=-2\). As \((x+2)^2\) increases without bound, \(f(x)\) increases without bound. So the range is \([\sqrt{3},\infty)\).
