What is the domain of the function \(f(x)=\sqrt{9-(x-1)^2}\)?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: \([-2,4]\)

For a real-valued square root, the expression inside the radical must be non-negative. Hence \(9-(x-1)^2\ge 0\), so \((x-1)^2\le 9\). This gives \(-3\le x-1\le 3\), or \(-2\le x\le 4\). Therefore, the domain is \([-2,4]\). Option C contains values for which the expression inside the square root is negative. Exam tip: To find the domain of a square-root function, set its radicand greater than or equal to zero.
