In the graph of the function \(f(x)=\lfloor x\rfloor\), what is the value of \(y\) for \(x\in[-3,-2)\)?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: \(y=-3\)

The greatest integer function \(\lfloor x\rfloor\) gives the greatest integer less than or equal to \(x\). For every \(x\) in \([-3,-2)\), we have \(-3\le x<-2\), so \(\lfloor x\rfloor=-3\) and hence \(y=-3\). Note that \(x=-2\) is excluded from the interval; at \(x=-2\), the function value would be \(-2\).
