What is the horizontal asymptote of the function \(f(x)=\frac{3}{x+2}-1\)?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: \(y=-1\)

As \(|x|\) becomes very large, \(\frac{3}{x+2}\) approaches 0. Therefore, \(f(x)\) approaches \(-1\), so the horizontal asymptote is \(y=-1\). The line \(x=-2\) is the vertical asymptote because the denominator becomes zero there. Exam tip: For a function of the form \(\frac{a}{x-h}+k\), the horizontal asymptote is directly \(y=k\).
