If \(f(x)=x^2\) and \(g(x)=3x\), what values of \(x\) satisfy \((f-g)(x)=0\)?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: \(x=0\) or \(x=3\)

\((f-g)(x)=f(x)-g(x)=x^2-3x=x(x-3)\). By the zero-product rule, \(x(x-3)=0\) gives \(x=0\) or \(x=3\). Option B is incorrect because \((f-g)(1)=1-3=-2\), not zero. Exam tip: first form the difference of the functions, then factorise it.
