If \(\frac{(n+2)!}{n!}=30\), what is the value of (n)?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: 4

Cancelling \(n!\) gives \(\frac{(n+2)!}{n!}=(n+2)(n+1)\). Hence, \((n+2)(n+1)=30\). For \(n=4\), we get \(6\times5=30\), so the correct value is \(4\). Although \(n=-7\) also makes the product 30, ordinary factorial notation requires \(n\) to be a non-negative integer. Exam tip: Expand the larger factorial into consecutive factors first, then cancel the common factorial.
