When 5 is subtracted from twice a number, the result is at least 13. What is the solution for the number \(x\)?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: \(x\geq 9\)

‘At least 13’ means 13 or more, so the inequality is \(2x-5\geq 13\). Adding 5 to both sides gives \(2x\geq 18\), and dividing by the positive number 2 gives \(x\geq 9\). The inequality sign does not change because the divisor is positive. Remember that \(x=9\) is included, so \(x>9\) is not correct.
