Shape

Correct answer: A. When the figure needs to look natural and light-based.

Direct answer: A is correct. An outline is a drawn boundary that clearly separates a figure from its background. In many natural observations, however, objects are not surrounded by a dark, equally strong line. Their visible edges are created by differences in colour, lightness and darkness, and by the way light falls across the surface. If an artist removes the outline and lets contrasting colour or value define the figure, the result can appear more natural, atmospheric and connected to the light. This requires careful observation because the figure must remain readable without a hard boundary. B is too narrow and concerns a particular detail, not the general method. C concerns cutting paper, and D concerns writing; neither explains pictorial form. Memory cue: a mature painted edge may be “seen” through contrast rather than drawn as a line.

Correct answer: A. Selecting shapes unsuitable for the target audience.

Direct answer: A is correct. Every design should be judged in relation to its audience, purpose and intended mood. Children’s books often need visual choices that are understandable, inviting and emotionally suitable for the age group. Too many sharp, threatening shapes can suggest danger or fear and may conflict with a story or page intended to feel friendly and secure. The problem is therefore not that sharp shapes can never be used, but that their excessive or unsuitable use may ignore the target audience. B generally supports reading by preventing text from becoming crowded. C generally helps children recognise objects and follow the images. D generally improves legibility when text and background are clearly separated. A common confusion is to treat a design element as universally good or bad; its effect depends on context, quantity and audience.

Correct answer: A. A contrast between nature and human-made order

Answer: A. Geometric shapes often suggest regularity, structure, or human design, while organic shapes often suggest natural forms and growth. Their contrast can therefore suggest a relationship or tension between nature and human-made order. Shape alone does not determine hue, paper weight, or tactile texture.

Correct answer: A. Clarity of a meaningful cue

Correct answer: A, clarity of a meaningful cue. A symbol is not successful merely because its shape is simple. It must also communicate an intended idea clearly enough for the viewer to recognise or infer its meaning. Context can help, but if the design becomes meaningless outside that context, its visual cue is weak or incomplete. Option A is correct because the missing quality is understandable meaning. Option B is unrelated: paper thickness does not determine whether a symbol communicates. Option C is not necessarily relevant; a symbol may work in one colour or many. Option D concerns surface feel, not interpretation. Memory cue: simple shape is the form; clear meaning is the message. Good symbol design needs both.

Correct answer: A. When it makes hidden meaning instantly memorable

Correct answer: A. Negative shape, or negative space, is the unoccupied area around or between the main forms. It is not simply useless emptiness. Designers can arrange that space so it forms a second image, symbol, letter, or visual idea. When viewers notice this hidden meaning and remember it easily, the negative shape may communicate more powerfully than the obvious subject. A is correct because purposeful empty space adds a memorable message. B is wrong because confusion weakens communication. C is wrong because purposeless emptiness has no deliberate visual function. D is wrong because covering text usually harms readability rather than improving meaning. Memory cue: in strong design, the empty area can speak too.

Correct answer: C. Add a strong symbolic shape or a purposeful negative-space cue

The correct answer is C. A distinctive symbolic shape or a purposeful figure–ground effect made with negative space can give a poster a memorable visual identity and reinforce its message. Thicker paper affects durability, not usually recall; shrinking all the text may make it harder to read.

Correct answer: B. The impression of scientific order may weaken

The correct answer is B. If many irregular organic shapes are used without a clear system, the layout may feel less ordered, weakening an impression of scientific organisation. Organic shapes are not inherently unsuitable for science; the issue is whether their use supports the poster’s message and structure.

Correct answer: A. Quick recognition and message clarity

Answer: A. A symbol is a simplified visual sign that stands for an idea, object, action, or message. Its usefulness depends on recognisable features and quick communication. When too many details, decorative parts, or confusing shapes are added, the viewer must spend time decoding it. The intended meaning may then be missed, misunderstood, or noticed too late. B is not necessarily affected because a symbol can be complex with few colours. C does not automatically determine recognition, and D describes the paper rather than the symbol’s communication. A simple symbol is not one with no meaning; it is one whose important meaning is easy to see. Memory cue: simplify the appearance, not the message.
