Under which condition is the sum \(S_n\) of the first \(n\) natural numbers odd?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: \(n\equiv 1\) या \(2\pmod{4}\)

Using \(S_n=\frac{n(n+1)}{2}\), one of \(n\) and \(n+1\) is even. After division by 2, the product is odd only when \(n\) leaves remainder 1 or 2 on division by 4. Thus, merely calling \(n\) odd or even is insufficient. Exam tip: test residues 0, 1, 2 and 3 modulo 4.
