Why was the capture of the Winter Palace not only a military event in the October Revolution?

The Winter Palace was the seat of the Provisional Government in Petrograd, so its capture had political meaning beyond the physical seizure of a building. The Bolsheviks and their supporters used the Military Revolutionary Committee and armed workers, soldiers and sailors to take key points and remove the government in October 1917. Once the palace fell, the authority that had replaced the Tsar after the February Revolution was itself overthrown. The event therefore demonstrated a transfer of power to the Bolsheviks and their revolutionary institutions, even though the wider struggle for control continued.
