Why was the relation between land and labour control important in plantation agriculture?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Because large plantations required both extensive land and a controlled, regular workforce

Plantation crops such as tea, coffee and rubber were grown over large areas and needed regular workers for cultivation, harvesting and processing. Therefore, colonial rulers and plantation owners sought control over land as well as the recruitment and movement of labourers. Option B is misleading because land revenue was not the only purpose; the key need was land and a steady, cheap workforce for production. Exam tip: remember plantation agriculture as ‘large landholdings + controlled labour’.
