What effect did forest management have on local people's lives in Java?

Correct answer: Restrictions increased on their traditional uses

Direct answer: Option A, restrictions increased on traditional uses. Colonial forest management usually meant mapping, classification, permits and rules designed to protect commercial timber, not unrestricted community access. Step by step: villagers had customary uses such as collecting wood, grazing animals and gathering forest produce; the state declared forests under official control; activities were regulated or forbidden; penalties could follow disobedience; therefore restrictions on traditional use increased. Option A is correct. Option B is wrong because villagers were not made owners of all forests. Option C is wrong because management directly affected their work and livelihood. Option D is wrong because the population was not all sent to Europe. Exam cue: colonial “management” often meant control for revenue and timber, bringing limits for local people.
