Why is Kezia's fear-filled imagination different from her father's real character?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Because fear can distort the image of a person

The governing concept is the difference between perception and reality. Kezia is a small child who notices her father’s stern voice, large physical presence and strict manner, so fear magnifies these features in her imagination and makes him seem almost monstrous. Later, when she is frightened at night, her father protects her, carries her to his room and comforts her. This direct experience reveals tenderness that her earlier fear had hidden. Therefore option A is correct: fear can distort a person’s image without proving that the person is actually cruel. Options B, C and D are unsupported by the story and do not explain Kezia’s changing understanding.
