Why is empathy in the story not merely pity?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Because it involves understanding another person's situation and feeling

The governing concept is the difference between pity and empathy. Pity may mean feeling sorry for someone from a distance, whereas empathy requires trying to understand that person's feelings, circumstances and point of view. In the story, a mature reading considers both Kezia's fear and her father's tiredness, reserve and affection. The reader does not simply label the father cruel or feel sorry for the child; the reader understands how misunderstanding affects both of them. Option A is therefore correct. Crying, punishment and giving money are not definitions of empathy and do not explain the relationship shown in the text.
