What may the Council of Ministers have to do if a no-confidence motion is passed?

A no-confidence motion asks whether the Council of Ministers still has the support of a majority in the Lok Sabha. In a parliamentary system, the government must retain this majority because it is collectively responsible to the elected House. If the motion is passed, the government has lost the House’s confidence and cannot normally continue in office as before. The Council of Ministers may therefore have to resign, after which constitutional steps may be taken to identify an alternative government or hold an election when necessary.
