Why is using only the darkest colour not always enough to create a focal point in watercolour?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Placement, edge quality and detail also matter along with value

The governing concept is visual hierarchy: a focal point is created by a coordinated group of visual cues rather than darkness alone. Value contrast can attract attention, but placement, sharper or more controlled edges, selective detail, colour contrast, and surrounding quiet areas also guide the viewer’s eye. A dark mark in an unimportant position may fail to dominate, while excessive dark marks everywhere remove emphasis. Dark colour is not always transparent, and both suitable paper and brushes can handle it.
