What is an appropriate way to separate the foreground from the background in watercolour?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Use stronger contrast and clearer detail in the foreground

The governing concept is depth through contrast and detail. Objects in the foreground are perceived as nearer when they have stronger light–dark contrast, clearer edges and more visible details. The background should generally use softer edges, lower contrast and less intense colour so it recedes. Giving both areas the same value weakens spatial separation, while intensifying the background reverses the usual depth cue. Removing every edge also destroys form, so option A is correct.
