Repeated water application to lighten an area created flower-like edges. What caused this?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Fresh water entering a partly dry wash

The governing concept is a backrun, also called a bloom. When fresh water is introduced into a wash that is partly dry, the new moisture moves into the drying paint and pushes pigment toward an irregular boundary. The result is a flower-like mark. Concentrated pigment may make the mark darker, but it does not create the bloom without uneven moisture. Stretching paper and using a pointed brush do not explain this spreading pattern. A controlled damp brush is safer for lifting colour.
