Pencil shading introduces Class 9 students to the basic techniques used to create light, shadow, tone, texture, and depth in drawings. As part of Art Education and the Drawing Basics chapter, students learn how to control pencil pressure, build gradual tonal changes, use hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, and blending, and observe how light falls on simple forms. They practise shading objects such as spheres, cylinders, cubes, and everyday subjects while developing proportion, contrast, three-dimensional form, patience, and careful visual observation.

The governing concept is to observe reflected light and surrounding values rather than applying a fixed symbol for transparency.
