Constituent Assembly

In the Interim Government formed in 1946, Jawaharlal Nehru served as Vice-President of the Viceroy's Executive Council and effectively led the government. The Viceroy remained its formal head under the colonial arrangement. Nehru was therefore not the Viceroy, a Company official or a military commander. The Constituent Assembly held its first meeting on 9 December 1946 in New Delhi. Dr B. R. Ambedkar was appointed chairman of the Drafting Committee on 29 August 1947.
