Adoption of the Constitution
This topic from Class 12 History examines how the Constituent Assembly debated, refined and finally adopted India’s Constitution on 26 November 1949, completing the framing process described in “Framing the Constitution: The Beginning of a New Era.” Students learn about the Assembly’s role, the ideals of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity expressed in the Preamble, and the effort to balance fundamental rights, democratic government and social change. It also explains why the Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950 and how this marked India’s transition to a republic.
