Why can fog appear more severe in some polluted cities?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Particles help both as condensation nuclei and in light scattering

Correct answer: A. Fog consists of very small water droplets, or sometimes ice particles, suspended close to the ground. Polluted air contains smoke, dust and other fine particles. These particles can act as condensation nuclei: water vapour can collect on them when air cools and approaches saturation. They also scatter light, so the atmosphere looks hazier and objects become harder to see. Therefore pollution can make existing fog appear denser and visibility poorer, although pollution alone does not guarantee fog; moisture, cooling and suitable atmospheric conditions are also needed. B is wrong because pollution does not always remove water vapour. C is wrong because polluted air does not create zero pressure. D is unrelated to fog formation. Memory cue: polluted fog means nuclei plus light scattering, not zero pressure or loss of all vapour.
