Mist and fog may form from similar droplets yet why are they reported separately in weather reports?
Mist and fog can both consist of tiny water droplets suspended in air, but meteorological reports distinguish them mainly by visibility. Fog causes a greater reduction in visibility; conventionally, visibility below 1 km is reported as fog. In mist, visibility is comparatively better. Option A is wrong because mist also contains water droplets, and option B is wrong because fog is not made only of ice particles. Exam tip: for fog–mist questions, use the visibility criterion first.
