Unit 8: Data Storytelling

Data visualization is the practice of representing information with charts, graphs, maps, or other visual forms. Its purpose is to make relationships, trends, distributions, and comparisons easier to notice and explain, particularly when a table contains many values. A visualization may support analysis and storytelling, but it does not hide the dataset, delete its original values, or replace the need for a data model.

A bar chart uses separate bars to represent values for distinct categories. It is therefore suitable for comparing items such as the sales of different products or the marks of different students. Line charts are usually more suitable for showing change over time.

A line graph places values in an ordered sequence and connects successive points, making the direction and rate of change visible. It is therefore especially useful for time-series information, such as daily temperature, monthly attendance, or yearly revenue. A bar chart is usually better for separate-category comparisons, a pie or stacked chart can show parts of a whole, and a map is more suitable for geographic distribution.

A scatter plot represents paired values of two numerical variables as points. The pattern of these points can show a relationship, trend, or possible correlation between the variables. A line chart is generally more suitable for showing how one variable changes over time.

A misleading graph may use an inappropriate scale, a truncated axis, incomplete data, or unclear labels. Such features can exaggerate or hide actual differences and cause readers to draw incorrect conclusions. Clear labels and suitable scales help readers interpret data accurately.

The correct graph makes patterns and comparisons in data easier to understand. For example, a bar chart is useful for comparing categories, while a line graph is suitable for showing change over time. Therefore, selecting a graph suited to the data supports accurate conclusions; it is incorrect that all graphs convey the same meaning. Exam tip: First identify whether the data show comparison, change over time, or distribution, and then choose the graph.

The governing concept is the slope or rate of change in a line graph. An upward direction means the measured value is increasing, while a steep slope means that the increase is large over a relatively short horizontal interval. Therefore, option A is correct.
