Revolutions of the World

Correct answer: A, the Soviet Union. The Cuban Revolution brought Fidel Castro and his supporters to power in 1959. Cuba then developed a socialist political and economic system. During the Cold War, the United States opposed the Cuban government, especially after Cuba nationalized some foreign-owned properties and built closer relations with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union provided Cuba with economic, military, and political support. A is correct because Cuba became closely aligned with the Soviet bloc. B is wrong because the British Empire was not Cuba's Cold War superpower partner. C is wrong because the Austro-Hungarian Empire had already ended in 1918. D is wrong because Japan was not the communist superpower supporting Cuba. Memory cue: Cuban socialism plus Cold War opposition to the United States points to the Soviet Union.
