Historical Monuments of India

Shalimar Bagh is a famous Mughal garden of Kashmir. In exams link it with the Mughal garden tradition.

The Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is located in Agra. In exams connect it with Mughal tomb architecture.

The Basilica of Bom Jesus is a famous church in Old Goa, Goa. It houses the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier and is an important monument of Christian heritage. Maharashtra and Kerala also have well-known churches, but the Basilica of Bom Jesus is in Goa. Exam tip: Remember it with the UNESCO World Heritage site ‘Churches and Convents of Goa’.

Nathmal Ki Haveli is located in Jaisalmer. In exams connect Jaisalmer with havelis and forts.

Falaknuma Palace is located in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana. Built in the nineteenth century, it later became an important royal residence associated with the Nizams of Hyderabad. Delhi, Bhopal, and Udaipur are also known for historic sites, but Falaknuma Palace is not located in any of them. Exam tip: Remember Falaknuma Palace with Hyderabad and Nizam-era heritage.

Leh Palace is located in Ladakh. In exams remember it as a historical heritage of the Himalayan region.

Shaniwar Wada is in Pune, Maharashtra. Built in 1732 for Peshwa Bajirao I, it served as an important residence and administrative centre of the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire. Mumbai is also in Maharashtra, but Shaniwar Wada is not located there. Exam tip: associate Shaniwar Wada with Pune and Peshwa rule.

The ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara are located in Bihar. Remember it as an ancient centre of learning in exams.

The monuments of Hampi are located in Karnataka. In exams connect them with the Vijayanagara Empire.

The Elephanta Caves are on Elephanta Island in Mumbai Harbour, near Mumbai, Maharashtra. They are especially known for rock-cut Shaiva art and the large Trimurti Sadashiva sculpture. Jaipur, Lucknow and Patna are not near the site. Exam tip: Remember Elephanta Caves with Mumbai and Shaiva art.

Jaisalmer Fort is in Jaisalmer city, Rajasthan. It is also called Sonar Qila or the Golden Fort because it is built largely of yellow sandstone. It is not located in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, or Haryana. Exam tip: Link Jaisalmer, the Thar Desert, and Sonar Qila with Rajasthan.

Cellular Jail is located in Port Blair. In exams connect it with the imprisonment of freedom fighters.

The Red Fort is located in Delhi and is associated with Shah Jahan. It is also famous for Independence Day celebrations.

Charminar is a renowned historical monument located in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana. It was built in 1591 CE by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. Ahmedabad, Amritsar, and Udaipur are also historic cities, but Charminar is not associated with them. Exam tip: Remember Charminar with Hyderabad and the Qutb Shahi dynasty.

Ajanta Caves are located in Maharashtra. They are famous for Buddhist paintings and cave art.

Brihadeeswarar Temple is in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. It was commissioned by the Chola ruler Rajaraja I in the 11th century and is a major example of Dravidian-Chola architecture. Madurai is chiefly associated with the Meenakshi Amman Temple, so it is incorrect. Exam tip: Remember Brihadeeswarar Temple with Thanjavur and Rajaraja I.

Hawa Mahal is located in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. Its many small windows and jharokhas allow air to circulate, which gives it the name “Palace of Winds.” Jodhpur is also in Rajasthan, but Hawa Mahal is not located there. Exam tip: Remember Hawa Mahal as one of Jaipur’s best-known monuments.

Humayun's Tomb is located in Delhi. It was built in memory of the Mughal emperor Humayun and is regarded as an important early example of Mughal architecture. Agra is a close distractor because it has famous Mughal monuments such as the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Exam tip: Memorise monuments with their cities—Humayun's Tomb: Delhi.

Jama Masjid of Delhi is associated with Shah Jahan. Remember Shah Jahan with the Taj Mahal Red Fort and Jama Masjid.

Akbar's Tomb is at Sikandra, near Agra in Uttar Pradesh. Its construction was begun by Akbar and completed by his son Jahangir. Sarnath is known for Buddhist monuments, so it is not the correct option. Exam tip: Remember Akbar's Tomb—Sikandra; Taj Mahal—Agra.
