Historical Monuments of India

The Red Fort is located in Delhi and is associated with Shah Jahan. It is also famous for Independence Day celebrations.

Charminar is a renowned historical monument located in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana. It was built in 1591 CE by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. Ahmedabad, Amritsar, and Udaipur are also historic cities, but Charminar is not associated with them. Exam tip: Remember Charminar with Hyderabad and the Qutb Shahi dynasty.

The direct answer is B: the Ajanta Caves are in Maharashtra. Ajanta is a group of rock-cut Buddhist caves in the Aurangabad region, now commonly associated with Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, Maharashtra. They are especially famous for ancient murals, sculptures, monasteries, and Buddhist artistic traditions. Option A, Odisha, is wrong because Odisha has other important temples and monuments, but Ajanta is not there. Option B is correct because the cave complex is located in Maharashtra. Option C, Kerala, is wrong because Kerala is in southern India and does not contain Ajanta. Option D, Bihar, is wrong although Bihar has important Buddhist places such as Bodh Gaya; Ajanta itself is in Maharashtra. Do not confuse Ajanta with Ellora, which is also in Maharashtra but is a separate cave complex. Memory cue: Ajanta and Ellora—both Maharashtra cave sites.

Brihadeeswarar Temple is in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. It was commissioned by the Chola ruler Rajaraja I in the 11th century and is a major example of Dravidian-Chola architecture. Madurai is chiefly associated with the Meenakshi Amman Temple, so it is incorrect. Exam tip: Remember Brihadeeswarar Temple with Thanjavur and Rajaraja I.

Hawa Mahal is located in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. Its many small windows and jharokhas allow air to circulate, which gives it the name “Palace of Winds.” Jodhpur is also in Rajasthan, but Hawa Mahal is not located there. Exam tip: Remember Hawa Mahal as one of Jaipur’s best-known monuments.

Humayun's Tomb is located in Delhi. It was built in memory of the Mughal emperor Humayun and is regarded as an important early example of Mughal architecture. Agra is a close distractor because it has famous Mughal monuments such as the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Exam tip: Memorise monuments with their cities—Humayun's Tomb: Delhi.

Jama Masjid of Delhi is associated with Shah Jahan. Remember Shah Jahan with the Taj Mahal Red Fort and Jama Masjid.

Akbar's Tomb is at Sikandra, near Agra in Uttar Pradesh. Its construction was begun by Akbar and completed by his son Jahangir. Sarnath is known for Buddhist monuments, so it is not the correct option. Exam tip: Remember Akbar's Tomb—Sikandra; Taj Mahal—Agra.

Mehrangarh Fort is located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Its construction was begun in the 15th century by the Rathore ruler Rao Jodha, and it stands on Chidiyatunk Hill. Jaipur is associated with Amer Fort, so that option is incorrect. Exam tip: Remember the pairs Mehrangarh–Jodhpur and Amer–Jaipur together.

Chittorgarh Fort is located in Rajasthan and is one of the most important historic forts of India. It is closely connected with Mewar and with the history of Rajput resistance, administration and culture. The fort stands on a large hill and contains palaces, temples, towers and memorial structures. These details help identify its historical importance, while the question asks only for the state.

The name Chittorgarh itself points to the city of Chittorgarh in southern Rajasthan. It was the major stronghold of the Mewar kingdom before the capital shifted to Udaipur. Gujarat, Maharashtra and Bihar have their own famous forts and monuments, but Chittorgarh Fort is not located in any of them. Thus, option B, Rajasthan, follows directly from the monument’s location.

City Palace is in Udaipur, Rajasthan. It was an important palace complex of the rulers of Mewar and stands beside Lake Pichola. Karnataka, Odisha, and Assam do not contain this City Palace of Udaipur. Exam tip: link Udaipur with Mewar, the City of Lakes, and Rajasthan.

Amarnath Cave is a well-known pilgrimage site in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, in the Himalayan region. It is associated with the Amarnath Yatra and is visited by devotees during the pilgrimage season. The location is often confused with Ladakh because both are Himalayan regions, but the cave is not in Ladakh. Delhi and Puducherry are also Union Territories, yet neither contains this cave.

Option B is correct: Jammu and Kashmir. The answer depends on identifying the present administrative location of the cave, not merely its mountain setting or religious importance. Option A is a plausible distractor because Ladakh is geographically nearby and also mountainous, but it is a separate Union Territory. Options C and D are unrelated to the site’s location. Accurate map knowledge helps distinguish these territories.

Sarnath is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. After attaining enlightenment, Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon here to his five former companions; this event is known as Dharmachakra Pravartana. Jainism is also an ancient Indian religion, but Sarnath is especially associated with Buddha’s first sermon. Exam tip: Remember Sarnath as the site of Buddha’s first sermon and the turning of the Wheel of Dharma.

The Mahabodhi Temple is located at Bodh Gaya in Bihar. It is closely connected with the life of Gautama Buddha because Bodh Gaya is traditionally regarded as the place where he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. The temple is therefore important for Buddhist history, religion, art, and pilgrimage. Identifying the event associated with a place is a useful way to remember its location.

Option A, Bodh Gaya, is correct. Sanchi is known for important Buddhist stupas, and Kushinagar is associated with Buddha’s final passing, but neither is the location asked for here. Amaravati is also a historic Buddhist centre, yet the Mahabodhi Temple is specifically at Bodh Gaya. The connection between enlightenment and Bodh Gaya clearly supports option A.

The Shore Temple is located at Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, on the coast of Tamil Nadu. It is a celebrated group of stone temples connected with the Pallava rulers. Its name reflects its position near the sea, and its architecture shows the development of South Indian temple building in the early medieval period. The monument is part of the larger heritage complex at Mahabalipuram, which includes rock-cut caves, reliefs, and other temples.

Option A is correct because Mahabalipuram is the established location of the Shore Temple. Khajuraho is known for its medieval temples in Madhya Pradesh, Hampi for Vijayanagara remains in Karnataka, and Mandu for its historic buildings in Madhya Pradesh. These are important places, but they are not associated with this monument. The best memory link is: Shore Temple—Mahabalipuram—Pallava architecture—seacoast of Tamil Nadu.

Dilwara Jain Temples are located at Mount Abu in Rajasthan. They are famous for marble carving.

The direct answer is A, Gujarat. Somnath Temple stands at Prabhas Patan near Veraval, on the Gujarat coast. It is a famous Hindu temple and an important historical and religious place. The reasoning is simple: identify Somnath, recall its location in Gujarat, and match that state with option A. Option A is correct because the Somnath shrine is in Gujarat. Option B, Haryana, is incorrect because Somnath is not located there; Haryana is a different north Indian state. Option C, Kerala, is incorrect because Kerala is in the southwest and is not the state of Somnath Temple. Option D, Manipur, is incorrect because Manipur is in the northeast. A useful exam cue is: Somnath—Gujarat, just as Dwarka is also associated with Gujarat. Do not confuse the temple with another famous shrine in a different state.

The Jagannath Temple is located in Puri, a coastal city in Odisha. It is dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra, and is especially known for the annual Rath Yatra. Konark is famous for the Sun Temple, so it is a nearby but incorrect option. Exam tip: Remember monuments along with their principal city and associated festival.

The Lingaraja Temple is located in Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha. It is a major example of the Kalinga style of temple architecture and is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva in the form of Lingaraja. Its large temple complex and distinctive towers make it an important monument of Odisha’s religious and architectural history. The city association is the key fact required here.

Option A is correct because Bhubaneswar is the recognised location of the Lingaraja Temple. Puri is famous for the Jagannath Temple, while Ranchi and Indore are not the city associated with this monument. Remembering the pairing “Lingaraja—Bhubaneswar” helps distinguish it from other important temples in Odisha. Therefore the correct choice is A.

Siddhivinayak Temple is located in Mumbai. It is counted among famous religious sites of modern India.

Rani ki Vav is a historic stepwell situated at Patan in Gujarat. A stepwell is a deep structure built with steps leading down to water, and it also served as a place for rest, gathering and artistic expression. Rani ki Vav is especially famous for its detailed sculptures and carefully planned underground design. It is an important example of the architectural traditions of western India.

To answer, connect the monument with its city and state: Rani ki Vav is at Patan, and Patan is in Gujarat. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh also have historic wells, temples and monuments, but they are not the state asked for here. Therefore, option A, Gujarat, is correct. Remembering “Rani ki Vav—Patan—Gujarat” is a useful way to avoid confusion.

Fatehpur Sikri was a major city founded by Akbar. Link it with Akbar's architecture and religious policy.

Hampi is famous for the ruins of the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. It has special importance in South Indian history.

Jantar Mantar Jaipur is associated with Sawai Jai Singh II. Remember it with astronomy and Rajput patronage.

The Stone Chariot is one of the best-known monuments at Hampi in Karnataka. It stands in the Vittala Temple complex and is celebrated for its carved stone form and association with the artistic achievements of the Vijayanagara period. Although it looks like a chariot, it is a stone architectural structure rather than an ordinary vehicle. Therefore, option A, Hampi, is the correct choice.

A useful way to reach the answer is to connect the phrase “Stone Chariot” with Hampi’s Vittala Temple. Hampi was an important centre of the Vijayanagara Empire, and its temples, halls, pillars, and sculptures show the richness of that tradition. Sanchi is chiefly known for its Buddhist stupa, Ajanta for rock-cut Buddhist paintings and caves, and Sarnath for important Buddhist heritage, but none of these is the standard location of the famous Stone Chariot. Thus the supplied answer A is accurate.
