Rivers and Lakes of India

The Bhagirathi stream of Ganga rises from the Gangotri Glacier. Source locations are often asked in exams.

The Yamuna is a major Himalayan river and its traditionally identified source is the Yamunotri Glacier in Uttarakhand. From the high Himalaya, the river flows through the Yamunotri region and eventually joins the Ganga at Prayagraj, forming part of the Ganga river system. Therefore option A is correct. Amarkantak is associated mainly with the source of the Narmada and Son rivers. Lake Mansarovar is linked with the upper courses or traditional source regions of rivers such as the Indus, Sutlej and Brahmaputra, not the Yamuna. Brahmagiri Hills are associated with the origin of the Godavari. These contrasts make the source-based answer clear.

The Brahmaputra enters Arunachal Pradesh as Siang or Dihang. Later it is known as Brahmaputra in Assam.

The Narmada flows westward and drains into the Arabian Sea. Remember west flowing rivers separately.

The Tapi flows westward and drains into the Arabian Sea. Narmada and Tapi are both west flowing rivers.

The Narmada flows westward through a rift valley and reaches the Arabian Sea via the Gulf of Khambhat. Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri flow eastward into the Bay of Bengal. Exam tip: Remember Narmada and Tapi as major west-flowing rivers.

The Godavari rises near Trimbak in Maharashtra. Remember the source states of peninsular rivers.

The Kaveri rises from the Brahmagiri Hills in Karnataka. It is very important among South Indian rivers.

The Mahanadi forms a large delta in Odisha before entering the Bay of Bengal. Identify delta forming rivers on the map.

Direct answer: Option B, Wular Lake is in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Wular is a large freshwater lake in the Kashmir Valley, associated with the Jhelum River system. Step by step: identify Wular as a lake of the Kashmir region; locate Kashmir administratively in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir; select option B. Option A, Ladakh, is wrong because Wular is not located in the Union Territory of Ladakh. Option B is correct and gives the present administrative location used in the question. Option C, Delhi, is wrong because Delhi has no Wular Lake. Option D, Chandigarh, is wrong because Chandigarh is a separate Union Territory and is not the location of this lake. Wular is known as one of India’s major freshwater lakes, which supports the identification but does not change the administrative answer. Be careful not to confuse the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir with the neighbouring Union Territory of Ladakh. Memory cue: Kashmir Valley—Wular; Wular—Jammu and Kashmir.

Vembanad Lake is one of the most famous lakes of Kerala. It is important in Kerala's backwater system.

Sambhar Lake is a famous saltwater lake in Rajasthan. It is important for exams because of salt production.

Hirakud Dam is built across the Mahanadi River in Odisha. It is a major multipurpose river-valley project used for flood control, irrigation, and hydropower generation. The Kaveri has dams such as Krishnarajasagara, so it is not the correct option here. Exam tip: learn important dams together with their rivers and states.

The Sardar Sarovar Dam is a major multipurpose project built across the Narmada River. The Narmada flows westward across central India and has a long valley that has supported several development and irrigation projects. The dam is connected with the Narmada Valley Project, which includes purposes such as irrigation, water supply and hydroelectric power. Identifying the river is therefore an important part of Indian geography.

Option A, Narmada, is correct. Sutlej, Damodar and Jhelum are different rivers associated with other regions and projects. The safest memory link is “Sardar Sarovar–Narmada,” just as the name Narmada Valley Project reinforces the association. The question asks for the river on which the dam stands, not the state or the project’s purpose, so Narmada directly answers it.

Bhakra Nangal is a major multipurpose dam and project built on the Sutlej River in northern India. The river flows through the Himalayan region and then across the plains. The project supports irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, and other regional needs. Identifying the river is more reliable than trying to infer it from the nearby state or city names.

Choice B, Sutlej, is correct. The Ravi is another important river of the Indus system, but Bhakra Nangal is not built on it. The Yamuna is associated with projects such as the Yamuna system, while the Pennar is a peninsular river of southern India. Therefore, among the listed options, Sutlej is the precise river connection for Bhakra Nangal Dam.

Damodar was called the Sorrow of Bengal because of floods. Dams and projects later helped control it.

The Kosi is called the Sorrow of Bihar because it often changes course and causes floods. River nicknames are useful for exams.

The direct answer is A: five rivers. The word Punjab is commonly understood from two words: panj, meaning five, and ab, meaning water or river. Thus, Punjab means the land of five rivers. In the Indus river system, the five traditionally associated rivers are Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej. Step by step: first identify the clue in the name Punjab; then count the rivers connected with the region; the count is five. Option A is correct because it gives this exact number. Option B, two rivers, is wrong because the traditional group contains five, not two. Option C, three lakes, is wrong because the question asks about rivers, not lakes. Option D, four waterfalls, is wrong because waterfalls are not the geographical feature connected with the name Punjab. Remember: Punjab means ‘land of five rivers’; the five names are Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej.

Beas is an important tributary of the Indus river system. Remember Himalayan river systems separately.

The confluence of Ganga and Yamuna is at Prayagraj. Confluence places are important in map based questions.

The Son is a major southern tributary of the Ganga. It rises in the central Indian highlands and flows generally north or northeast before joining the Ganga in the plains. A tributary is a smaller or secondary river that enters a larger main river. Once the Son joins the Ganga, its water becomes part of the Ganga river system and eventually follows the Ganga’s drainage route.

Choice A, Ganga, is correct. The Krishna and Kaveri are major peninsular rivers with their own drainage systems, and the Son does not join either of them. The Narmada flows westward into the Arabian Sea, whereas the Son belongs to the Ganga basin. Remembering the Son as a southern tributary of the Ganga makes the answer easy to identify.

Ghaghara is a major tributary of the Ganga. Tributaries of Ganga are important in North Indian geography.

The Chambal is an important river of north-central India and a major tributary of the Yamuna. It flows through the Malwa region and parts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh before joining the Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh. Through the Yamuna, its waters ultimately become part of the Ganga river system. Hence option A is correct. The Godavari belongs to the peninsular river system of south-central India, while the Brahmaputra follows a different Himalayan and northeastern course. The Mahanadi drains toward the Bay of Bengal through eastern India. The association of Chambal with ravines and the Yamuna basin is a useful geographical clue, but the decisive relationship in this question is its confluence with the Yamuna.

The Betwa is a major river of central India and a tributary of the Yamuna. It rises in Madhya Pradesh and flows generally northward through Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Near Hamirpur, it joins the Yamuna. Because the Yamuna is itself the principal tributary of the Ganga, the Betwa is also part of the larger Ganga drainage system, but its direct tributary relationship is with the Yamuna.

Option A is correct. The Betwa is not a tributary of the Brahmaputra, Luni, or Tapi. Its course through the Bundelkhand region and its meeting with the Yamuna are useful identifying facts. The question asks for the river to which Betwa directly belongs as a tributary, so Yamuna is the most precise choice.

The Luni is a major river of the dry region of Rajasthan. Desert rivers may not always reach the sea.
