Texture

Correct answer: A. Texture can help describe a material, but if it competes with the focal point, reduce its prominence—for example, by using less contrast, density, or detail in less important areas. Making it darker or adding detail would usually draw even more attention, while removing the subject would not solve the problem.

Correct answer: D, form and material will look inconsistent. Texture is the visible or implied surface quality of an object. In a believable drawing or painting, the direction of wood grain should follow the surface on which it appears. On a curved object, the grain should bend or flow with the curve; on a flat board, it should generally follow the length or natural direction of the board. If the grain runs against the form, the viewer may feel that the texture has been pasted on rather than placed on the surface. This weakens the connection between the object’s three-dimensional form and its material. A is incorrect because texture direction does not directly strengthen colour harmony. B is incorrect because a focal point depends mainly on emphasis, contrast, placement, and visual hierarchy. C is incorrect because surrounding space is a spatial or compositional issue, not the direct result of wood grain direction. Memory cue: texture should travel with the form.

Correct answer: A, texture gradient. Texture gradient is a depth cue based on the way surface details change with distance. On a nearby surface, individual marks, grains, or repeated patterns usually appear larger, clearer, and more separated. As the surface recedes, the same details normally appear smaller, denser, and less distinct. This gradual change is called a texture gradient. If a faraway object has texture that is just as large, clear, and detailed as the texture of a near object, the expected change is missing, so the viewer loses an important clue about distance. B is incorrect because linear perspective depends on receding edges and their apparent convergence toward vanishing points. C is incorrect because overlapping occurs when one object covers part of another. D is incorrect because height in the visual field is a different positional cue. Memory cue: near texture is clearer; far texture becomes finer and less distinct.

Direct answer: B is correct. Texture is the visual or tactile quality of a surface. A smooth object is usually communicated with even marks, gentle transitions, and little visible grain. If rough, grainy marks are placed on it, the viewer receives a conflicting signal: the shape may say “smooth,” while the surface marks suggest stone, bark, coarse wood, or another rough material. Because of that mismatch, the material identity may become uncertain. A is wrong because rough marks do not make smoothness clearer. C concerns colour temperature, which is a separate colour idea and cannot be concluded from grainy texture. D concerns rhythm and is not the main issue. The correction is to choose marks that agree with the object’s actual surface. Memory cue: surface marks must match the material they describe.

Correct answer: A. Texture is the visible or implied character of a surface. Natural stone usually contains differences in grain, cracks, spots, edges, spacing, and lightness. These differences are not arranged in a perfectly repeated pattern. If an artist copies one mark at equal intervals and with equal strength, the viewer notices a mechanical pattern rather than a natural surface. A is correct because irregularity and changes in value make the texture believable. B is wrong because complete regularity often suggests manufacture or decoration. C is wrong because stone clearly has surface qualities that can be observed and represented. D is wrong because colour can help describe stone, although colour alone does not create texture. Memory cue: natural texture is varied, not stamped.
