Line

Correct answer: C. Increasing energy or force in a direction

Correct answer: C. Pressure changes the appearance and expressive force of a line. A light beginning may feel delicate or less forceful, while increasing pressure can make the stroke darker, thicker, and more emphatic. When this change is controlled from one end to the other, it can suggest growing energy, movement, weight, or force in that direction. A is wrong because line quality can communicate structure and feeling. B is wrong because a dark ending does not automatically mean the whole picture has ended. D is wrong because pressure does not count colours. C is correct because it connects the visible change in the stroke with directional energy. The exact feeling also depends on context and medium. Memory cue: more pressure, more visual weight.

Correct answer: D. They allow correction of proportion and placement

Correct answer: D. Initial light lines are planning or searching lines. They help the artist locate the subject on the page, estimate its overall size, compare parts, establish axes and angles, and test proportion and placement before committing to dark contours. Because they are light, they can be adjusted, erased, or visually subordinated when the structure is corrected. A is wrong because these lines guide construction rather than serve only as decoration. B is wrong because their purpose is to reveal and organise the subject. C is wrong because a light preliminary line is often a deliberate working method, not automatically a mistake. D is correct because it leaves room to correct the arrangement. Memory cue: light first, confident later.

Correct answer: A. Balanced vertical and horizontal lines

Correct answer: A. In a linear architectural form, horizontal lines can suggest a firm base or rest, while vertical lines can suggest support, height, and upright structure. When these directions are arranged in a balanced and controlled way, the viewer experiences order and stability. A is correct because it combines structural direction with visual balance. B is wrong because broken diagonals usually suggest movement, instability, or disturbance rather than dependable support. C is wrong because lines without a clear base weaken the sense of standing or grounding. D is wrong because uncontrolled marks do not communicate planned construction. This does not mean every building must use only horizontal and vertical lines; it means these directions are reliable tools for expressing steadiness. Memory cue: horizontal supports, vertical stands.

Correct answer: B. When essential structural lines are retained

Correct answer: B, when essential structural lines are retained. A line drawing does not need every small detail to communicate what an object is. First, the artist observes the object and identifies its outline, important angles, proportions, direction, and a few distinctive parts. These structural lines carry the visual information needed for recognition. Unnecessary marks can then be removed without destroying the identity of the subject. Option A is wrong because erasing every line removes the visible information completely. Option C is wrong because changing the subject destroys the original identity rather than preserving it. Option D is wrong because proportions describe the relationship between parts; removing them can distort the object. Memory cue: simplify the details, but protect the lines that describe structure and proportion.

Correct answer: C. Converging lines moving toward the horizon

Correct answer: C, converging lines moving toward the horizon. In a street scene, parallel edges such as road sides, pavements, building edges, or roof lines appear to move closer together as they go farther away. In a perspective drawing, these lines guide the eye toward the horizon and often toward a vanishing point. This narrowing gives the flat paper a sense of depth and distance. Option A is wrong because tree leaves may add detail but do not usually establish the main perspective of the street. Option B is wrong because cloud decoration is not the principal cue for road depth. Option D is wrong because the frame border only limits the picture area. Memory cue: road edges converge toward the horizon; convergence suggests distance.

Correct answer: A. Because the natural texture of bark is uneven

Correct answer: A, because the natural texture of bark is uneven. Tree bark usually contains cracks, ridges, grooves, patches, and changes in direction. Irregular lines help the artist communicate this rough, non-uniform surface. The marks should not be copied as a perfectly repeated pattern, because regular repetition would make the bark look artificial. The artist can vary the length, spacing, thickness, direction, and darkness of the lines while still observing the actual tree. Option B is wrong because natural textures are not all identical. Option C is wrong because bark can clearly be represented with lines. Option D is wrong because bark is generally not represented as uniformly smooth. Memory cue: natural texture needs controlled variety, not mechanical repetition.

Correct answer: A. To show distance and atmospheric effect

Correct answer: A, to show distance and atmospheric effect. In a landscape, nearby forms are usually given clearer, darker, and more definite lines, while distant forms are softened and made less distinct. This difference helps the viewer read layers of space on a flat surface. The lighter treatment does not mean the distant mountains are unimportant or absent; it is a deliberate way to suggest atmospheric distance and reduced visual clarity. Option B is wrong because distance does not make an object automatically larger. Option C is wrong because mountains have many visible contours and textures that can be drawn with lines. Option D is wrong because a light line can be an intentional artistic choice. Memory cue: nearer forms are stronger; farther forms are softer.

Correct answer: B. By simplifying and exaggerating selected features

Correct answer: B, by simplifying and exaggerating selected features. A cartoon usually begins with observation, but the artist does not copy every feature with equal importance. Instead, the artist identifies a recognizable quality—such as a large nose, wide eyes, a particular hairstyle, or a characteristic posture—and makes it simpler, clearer, or larger for expressive effect. The exaggeration remains understandable because the essential identity is retained. Option A is wrong because equal treatment does not create emphasis. Option C is wrong because visible lines are needed to define the cartoon. Option D is wrong because observation helps the artist know which features can be changed without losing recognition. Memory cue: observe carefully, simplify selectively, exaggerate purposefully.

Correct answer: C. Instability or incorrect perspective

Correct answer: C, instability or incorrect perspective. In an architectural drawing, vertical edges such as walls, door frames, and pillars usually help the building appear upright and stable. If these lines tilt unintentionally, the viewer may think the building is leaning, or may notice that the perspective construction has not been controlled. The effect can be intentional in an expressive drawing, but when the question says unintentionally, it is an error. Option A is wrong because accidental tilting does not communicate strength. Option B is wrong because symmetry requires corresponding, controlled relationships, not random slanting. Option D is wrong because vertical accuracy is unrelated to colour selection. Memory cue: check verticals before adding architectural detail.

Correct answer: D. The inner details may attract too much attention

D is correct. Darker lines carry more visual emphasis, so the viewer’s eye may go to the inner details before the overall shape. This can make the details compete with the outer contour and weaken the clarity of the main form.

Correct answer: A. They help explore proportion and structure and make adjustments easier

A is correct. Light preliminary strokes let the artist test the placement, direction, and proportions of shapes before committing to a darker contour. They can be adjusted more easily than heavy marks, and they reduce the need for repeated erasing.

Correct answer: B. Show a branching hierarchy from the main vein to secondary veins

B is correct. A leaf’s smaller veins branch from its main vein. Showing the main vein more prominently and the secondary veins as finer branches helps communicate this structure clearly.

Correct answer: C. By using repeated curved lines with considered direction and spacing

C is correct. A sequence of curved lines that follows a consistent flow can suggest the rise and movement of waves. Varying their spacing and direction helps create rhythm and a sense of motion.

Correct answer: D. Because a clean line without expression or structure can look lifeless

D is correct. Neatness can help, but line quality also depends on whether a line describes form, supports the structure, and expresses the purpose of the drawing. A smooth line without these qualities may feel lifeless.

Correct answer: A. It can show the base, contact with the supporting surface, and a sense of weight

A is correct. A carefully placed base or contact line can show where an object rests on a table or other surface, helping it appear stable and grounded. Light direction is usually shown through highlights and shadows, not by this line alone.

Correct answer: B. The spine or the main direction of the body’s action

B is correct. Observing the spine and the body’s main direction helps identify the animal’s overall pose and gesture, such as running, bending, or turning. Details like the eyes can be added after the main movement is established.

Correct answer: C. When it reduces movement and visual interest

C is correct. Symmetry can create order and balance, but exact repetition may make a design feel static or predictable. Small variations in line direction, spacing, or placement can add visual interest while preserving balance.

Correct answer: D. Use curved contour lines and shading lines that follow the surface

Correct answer: D. A vase has a rounded, three-dimensional form. Curved lines that follow its surface, together with shading lines that vary with the form and light, help suggest its volume. Equal straight lines or a uniform flat pattern are less effective at showing roundness.

Correct answer: A. The sequence of events or direction of action may become unclear

Correct answer: A. In a narrative drawing, directional lines help guide the viewer’s eye and show where figures are looking or moving. If those cues point in misleading directions, the action or sequence of events can become difficult to follow. Line direction does not automatically determine colour choices.

Correct answer: B. By keeping border lines light and controlled

Direct answer: B, by keeping the border lines light and controlled. In a design, the central subject is usually the main area that should receive the viewer’s attention. A border has a supporting role: it frames the composition, separates it from the surrounding space, and may add rhythm or decoration. If the border is very dark, thick, crowded, or strongly repeated, it can attract more attention than the subject and make the centre feel weak. Therefore, use lighter or thinner lines, suitable spacing, and restrained decoration around the edge. Option A is wrong because a darker border may overpower the subject. Option B is correct because controlled line weight protects the visual focus. Option C is wrong because an empty centre does not necessarily create a clear or meaningful subject. Option D is wrong because equal thickness may make the border monotonous and does not ensure that it will remain subordinate. Memory cue: the border should frame the message, not shout louder than the message.

Correct answer: C. Keeping clearer line in near and important areas

Direct answer: C, by using clearer lines for the nearer and more important parts. Lines can communicate more than an outline. Their clarity, darkness, thickness, and sharpness can help the viewer judge both distance and visual importance. A nearby object is commonly drawn with stronger, clearer, and more definite lines, while a distant object may be lighter or less distinct. Similarly, the part that carries the main idea can receive clearer treatment so that the eye notices it first. Option A is wrong because making a distant part darkest usually brings it forward instead of sending it back. Option B is wrong because identical lines do not show differences in depth or emphasis. Option C is correct because it combines spatial clarity with visual emphasis. Option D is wrong because blurring the main part weakens its importance. Memory cue: clear and strong lines come forward; lighter and less distinct lines recede, although the whole composition must remain consistent.

Correct answer: D. Because decoration can distract from the main form and meaning

Direct answer: D, because excessive decoration can distract from the main form and meaning. A line may show a boundary, direction, movement, structure, texture, or feeling. Decorative marks can be useful when they support that purpose, but too many marks compete for the viewer’s attention. The eye may start following repeated patterns or ornaments instead of understanding the important shape or message. Option A is wrong because decoration does not always clarify direction; it can make direction confusing. Option B is wrong because decoration does not necessarily turn a line into a geometric shape. Option C is wrong because decoration does not automatically remove colour, and colour is not the central issue here. Option D is correct because it explains the real danger: ornament can overpower communication. A good artist asks whether every decorative line has a purpose. Memory cue: decoration should support the idea, not cover it.

Correct answer: B. By keeping front figures clear and back figures lighter

Direct answer: B, by making foreground figures clearer and background figures lighter. Depth means showing that some forms are nearer and others are farther away. In a line drawing of a crowd, the artist can use stronger, darker, sharper, or more detailed lines for the people in front. Figures farther back can be drawn with lighter, less distinct, and sometimes smaller lines. Overlap can also help, because a figure covering part of another often appears in front, but option D removes that useful clue rather than using it. Option A is wrong because equal darkness and clarity flatten the crowd into one layer. Option B is correct because line clarity creates a useful near–far difference. Option C is wrong because making background figures larger generally conflicts with ordinary visual perspective. Option D is incomplete and generally unhelpful because removing overlap can make spatial relationships harder to read. Memory cue: foreground is usually clearer; background is usually lighter and less detailed.

Correct answer: A. Because visual weight is also created by a line’s thickness, direction, and placement

Direct answer: A, because line thickness, direction, and placement also create visual weight. The geometric centre is only a physical reference point; it does not tell us whether the composition feels balanced. A thick or dark line may attract more attention than a thin, light line. A diagonal line can create movement, while its position can make one side feel heavier than the other. Therefore, the viewer must compare the overall visual pull of the lines and forms on both sides. Option A is correct because it identifies the important line properties. Option B is wrong because equal distance from the centre does not guarantee equal visual weight. Option C is wrong because lines clearly contribute to balance. Option D is the opposite of the truth: line thickness and direction can affect balance. Memory cue: balance the visual weight, not merely the measured distance.

Correct answer: B. Changing according to bend, tension, and gesture

Direct answer: B, with lines that change according to bend, tension, and gesture. Fingers are not rigid, identical sticks; their direction, joints, curves, spacing, and pressure change with the hand’s pose. In an expressive drawing, the artist first observes the overall gesture of the hand, then indicates the major direction of each finger and the bends at the joints. Suitable variation in line helps show whether a finger is relaxed, bent, stretched, or pressing against another finger. Option A is wrong because identical straight lines make every finger look stiff and artificial. Option B is correct because changing the line with the pose communicates movement and expression. Option C is wrong because ignoring joints and bends removes important structural information. Option D is wrong because an outer square cannot describe the organic shape and gesture of a hand. Memory cue: observe the gesture first, then draw each finger’s direction and bend.
