Elements of Art

A square has four equal sides and four right angles, so it is a regular quadrilateral. A rhombus may also have equal sides, but its angles are not necessarily all equal; therefore, it is not always regular. Exam tip: identify a regular quadrilateral as a square.

The direct answer is C: a cube is a form because it has length, width, and depth. In visual art, an element can be flat or solid. A line mainly shows a path or boundary, colour is a visual property, and a shape is usually two-dimensional. A form is three-dimensional, so it occupies space and can be viewed as having height or length, width, and depth. A cube has all three dimensions and therefore represents a solid form. Option A is wrong because a cube may have colour, but it is not only colour. Option B is wrong because lines may draw its edges, but the cube is not merely a line. Option C is correct because its three dimensions give it volume and depth. Option D is wrong because a cube is not always made of paper; its artistic identity comes from its three-dimensional structure, whatever material is used. The reasoning is: form means three-dimensional object; a cube has three dimensions; therefore it is a form. Exam cue: shape is flat, form has depth.

A football is a three-dimensional object with length, width, depth, and volume, so it is an example of form. A flat circle and a printed triangle are two-dimensional shapes, while a line on paper represents the element of line. Exam tip: identify form by checking whether an object has depth and volume.

Shading creates the feeling of volume in a flat shape. Exam tip: connect shading with form illusion.

The small area of a sphere that receives the most direct and intense light is called the highlight. A shadow is the darker area away from the light source, while reflected light is the softer light that bounces onto the shadow side from nearby surfaces. Exam tip: In a shaded three-dimensional object, the brightest small patch is the highlight.

The dark area of a sphere represents the part of its surface that does not receive direct light, so it is the shadow. Main light is the brightest illuminated area, while a tint is a lighter colour made by adding white. Exam tip: in sphere drawings, dark values generally indicate shadow.

The colour wheel shows colour relationships in an organized way. Exam tip: remember colour wheel for colour relationship.

The direct answer is A, one main colour. Monochromatic comes from words meaning one and colour. In art, a monochromatic colour scheme is built from one colour family, with lighter, darker, or less intense versions of that same colour. Step by step: choose one base colour, such as blue; add white to make lighter tints or black to make darker shades, or vary its intensity; use those related versions together; the picture gets unity without changing to a different basic hue. Option A is correct because the scheme has one main colour family. Option B, two colours, describes a two-colour scheme, not monochromatic. Option C, three colours, is a multicolour or possibly a special three-colour scheme, but it is not monochromatic. Option D, four colours, is also a multicolour arrangement. The word does not mean only one paint mark or only one exact tone; it means one dominant hue with its variations. Memory cue: mono means one, so monochromatic means one colour family.

The direct answer is B: changing value. A monochromatic picture uses one colour family, but that does not mean every part must have the same lightness or darkness. Value means how light or dark a colour appears. Step by step: keep the hue or colour family the same; make some areas light, some medium, and some dark; use these value changes to separate forms, create emphasis, and add visual variety. Option A, changing paper, may alter the background but does not create variety within the monochromatic colour treatment. Option B is correct because different values of one colour produce contrast and interest while keeping the picture monochromatic. Option C, erasing the title, has no necessary effect on the picture’s colour variety. Option D, ringing a bell, is unrelated. Memory cue: monochrome keeps the hue, while value may move from light to dark.

Black white and grey are examples of neutral colours. Exam tip: understand neutral colours as calm base colours.

The direct answer is D, energy and brightness. Colour can create emotional and visual associations, and yellow is commonly connected with sunlight, light, warmth, happiness, energy, and brightness. This is a general art-learning association, not an absolute rule: context and shade can change the feeling. Option A, very cool darkness, is less suitable because yellow is usually a bright, light-associated colour rather than a symbol of darkness. Option B, hard texture, describes how a surface may feel or look, but texture is a different element from the emotional association of yellow. Option C, only distance, is incorrect because a colour can suggest many ideas, but yellow is not limited to distance. Option D is correct because yellow commonly gives a lively, warm, glowing impression. The reasoning is based on the familiar visual effect of sunlight and bright yellow objects. In an art exam, connect yellow with light, warmth, optimism, or energy when no special context is supplied. Remember that “generally” allows exceptions; do not treat colour meanings as fixed scientific laws.

Blue is generally considered a cool colour and is associated with calm natural scenes such as the sky and water. It can therefore create a feeling of peace, stability, and relaxation. Red is more commonly linked with energy or excitement, so it is not the best choice. Exam tip: remember that cool colours are usually associated with calm emotions.

Green is commonly associated with plants, leaves and the environment; therefore, it represents nature. Red, orange and yellow are more commonly used to show fire. Exam tip: remember green as the colour of nature and growth.

Texture tells surface quality such as smooth or rough. Exam tip: connect surface quality with texture.

Silk feels soft, even and free from rough projections, so it creates the effect of a smooth texture. Rough or sandy textures suggest an uneven, grainy surface, unlike silk. Exam tip: associate silk, glass and polished surfaces with smooth texture.

Tree bark usually has an uneven, raised surface that feels rough to touch; therefore, rough is the correct texture. Smooth texture is more typical of surfaces such as glass or polished objects, not bark. Exam tip: remember tree bark as a common natural example of rough texture.

Wool appears soft, fluffy and fibrous, so an artist uses a soft texture to represent its surface. Rough texture is more suitable for surfaces such as stone or tree bark. Exam tip: identify the surface quality of an object and match it with the appropriate texture.

The direct answer is C: grainy texture. Texture means how a surface looks or seems to feel. Sand is made of many tiny grains, so an artist can suggest it by placing many small dots, specks, or short marks close together. Step by step: identify the surface as sand; notice its repeated small particles; repeat small marks in an uneven pattern; the viewer reads that pattern as rough, granular surface. Option A, only hue, refers to the colour family, not the grain-like surface quality. Option B, only space, refers to empty or occupied area and does not describe the sand’s surface. Option C is correct because dots and grains imitate the visible granular character of sand. Option D, symmetrical balance, concerns equal or mirrored arrangement, not surface feel. Exam cue: repeated small dots or specks often communicate texture, especially sand or rough material.

An empty sky shows a large area of space in the picture. Exam tip: connect open sky with negative space.

The horizon line in a landscape drawing represents the apparent level where the sky and the land or water seem to meet. It helps the artist organize the scene and communicate distance, scale, and depth. Objects above or below this level may appear differently depending on the viewer’s position and perspective. The actual meeting point may be far away or hidden, so the line is an artistic indication rather than a physical mark in the landscape.

The question asks what the horizon line tells us. Option A is correct because it refers to the apparent meeting of sky and land. The line does not show the weight of colour, a paper shop, or only texture. It is also useful for constructing perspective, which explains why it suggests distance and depth in a landscape.

Lines going toward one point give a simple sign of perspective. Exam tip: connect converging lines with depth.

A road becoming narrower in the distance creates depth. Exam tip: connect perspective with distance illusion.

A near object is shown with more detail and clarity. Exam tip: identify distance by detail level.

A line can form the outer boundary or outline of an area. When lines join to make a closed boundary, a shape is perceived within it, so option A is correct. A shape does not necessarily erase a line, and a line is not a colour. Exam tip: remember that a closed line or outline helps create a shape.

Elements of art together give visual form to ideas and feelings. Exam tip: treat elements as the base of visual expression.
