पड़ी छाया यह संकेत देती है कि वस्तु किस सतह पर रखी है और उस सतह से उसका संपर्क कहाँ है। इसके बिना वस्तु सही बनी होने पर भी हवा में तैरती हुई या आधार से अलग लग सकती है। रंगों की संख्या वस्तु के धरातल पर टिके होने का भ्रम नहीं बनाती। परीक्षा टिप: स्थिर वस्तु-चित्र में वस्तु के नीचे और प्रकाश की दिशा के विपरीत पड़ी छाया अवश्य जाँचें। / A cast shadow indicates the surface on which an object rests and shows where it touches that surface. Without it, even a well-drawn object may appear to float or look detached from the ground. The number of colours does not create the illusion that the object is resting on a surface. Exam tip: in a still-life drawing, check that the cast shadow falls below the object and opposite to the light source.
