On a medium containing X-gal, colonies with a functional lacZ gene appear blue, whereas insertion of foreign DNA can disrupt lacZ and produce white colonies. Therefore, lacZ is used in blue-white screening. Antibiotic resistance is generally associated with a selectable marker, not with the lacZ reporter. Exam tip: remember that lacZ disruption gives white colonies.
