Avoid applying a very wet brush to a partly dry area
Simple Explanation
In watercolour, a backrun (also called a bloom or cauliflower) occurs when very wet paint or water enters a partly dry area. Water spreads from the wetter area into the relatively drier one, producing unwanted edges. Therefore, keeping the brush and paper at similar moisture levels and avoiding a very wet brush on a partly dry area is the best method. Simply tilting the paper does not prevent this moisture imbalance. Exam tip: Remember that backruns are mainly caused by a sudden difference in wetness between adjacent areas.
