What is measurement reliability most closely related to?
Answer and explanation
The direct answer is A: obtaining consistent results under similar conditions. Reliability means consistency or repeatability. If the same measurement procedure is used again in similar conditions and it gives very similar results, the measurement is reliable. Step by step: repeat the measurement, keep the relevant conditions similar, compare the readings, and check whether they agree closely. Option A is correct because it states this consistency directly. Option B describes validity more closely: validity asks whether the method or instrument measures the intended concept or quantity. A tool can be reliable but invalid if it gives nearly the same readings while measuring the wrong thing. Option C, the colour of an instrument, does not normally determine whether readings are consistent. Option D, the fame of a scientist, is not evidence about the quality or repeatability of a measurement. Thus reliability concerns dependable repeated results, whereas validity concerns measuring the right thing. Exam cue: reliable means repeatable; valid means appropriate or accurate for the intended purpose.
