What is it called when a possible cause is suggested for a phenomenon in science?

Correct answer: Explanation

The direct answer is A: explanation. In science, when we suggest a possible cause or account for an observed phenomenon, we are giving an explanation. It should be connected to observations and should be open to testing with evidence. Step by step: first notice a phenomenon, such as a plant growing poorly; then ask why it may be happening; propose a possible cause, such as insufficient light; collect measurements or perform tests; finally decide whether the evidence supports that explanation. Option A is correct because it names the proposed account of the phenomenon. Option B, “measurement,” means assigning a value using an instrument or standard, such as measuring height or temperature; it is evidence, not the suggested cause itself. Option C, “classification,” means grouping objects or events according to shared features, such as sorting materials; it does not state why something happened. Option D, “unit,” is a standard quantity used in measurement, such as metre or second; it is not a cause or account. A scientific explanation may be revised when new evidence appears. Memory cue: phenomenon is what happens; explanation is a possible answer to “why?”
